Engine oil VP D4

Our D4 Volvo Penta manual lists Volvo Penta SAE 15W40 API CJ4 for the diesel engine, based on what I wrote down. I do not have my manual with me to check other approved brands and am wondering what other equivalent others have used when changing the engine oil???

During my first D4-300 service, the certified Volvo mechanic used Delo. Unfortunately, I don't recall the exact specs of the oil.

Brand is not as important as the rating. Rotella T-6 is rated CJ-4

Rotella T-6 is synthetic. Rotella T-4 is standard heavy duty diesel oil. I have used T-4 because I was told that synthetic was not recommended until the engine has 500 hours. I went with that suggestion and have used T-4. Is there any knowledge of this statement? I asked the Volvo technician at the marina about this. He wasn't sure , "We are a Volvo dealer and use OEM Volvo 15W/40 diesel oil which is non synthetic. VDS-3, Volvo Drain Specifications, API SL, CI-4" in the past. The last year or so we changed the oil to Volvo OEM VDS-4, API CJ-4, and ACEA E9. Still non synthetic. Both Rotella T-6 and T-4 meet the same specs.VDS-4 and VDS-4.5 API CJ-4.
