Anyone having this problem with their R-25 with the Cummins Diesel engine? If so how did you solve it both short term and long term (hopefully)?
Thanks,
Gretchen Metz

Hi Gretchen

I would suggest contacting Cummins Northwest.
The General Manager name is Pat McCullough telephone number 425-235-3400 or his direct line
425-204-5590.

You probably know this but the Cummins website for the ECM lists error codes:

155 Intake Manifold 1 Temperature Choice

155b Intake Manifold 1 Temperature - Data Valid but Above Normal Operational Range - Most Severe Level

155bm Engine Coolant Temperature 1 Sensor Circuit — Voltage Above Normal or Shorted to High Source

Oh no, another one! Last summer we had the dreaded alarm go off after a particularly bad crossing of the Chesapeake Bay. HIGH IMT 155 requires replacement of a sensor, only available from Cummins, and located in a tough to reach spot under the teak step (well actually just under the bulkhead). I could not have made the replacement myself with all the coaching in the world.

This summer the same alarm hit the Carol B in Glouchester VA. Also required quite a wait for parts and service.

We were unable to silence the alarm and had no choice but wait for the repair. Seems you are not going to damage the engine, but we couldn't drive with the screaming alarm.

This part is made in China or something like that and is not just sitting on the shelf. We were so frustrated after our friend's tug experienced the same problem that it is on my to-do list to lay in a spare $125 part...

Good luck.

Gotta be a way to pull a wire on the alarm....One would think.... :?

We've just recently experience the same alarm. First, you can stop the alarm and clear the error message by hitting the check and X buttons on the upper right of the display. We checked with the factory and determined it was not a critical function so we continued our day cruise, canceling the alarm each time it came on. All gauges and performance appeared normal.

We set out again, a few days ago, but first had our service mechanic check to confirm there was no risk to us or the boat. He traced the alarm to the wire harness, very near the fuel pump (you know, the one you used to have to prime is you had a cold-start problem). He could make the alarm go off (and the display clear the error message) by jiggling the wiring. He suspects it may be a wiring problem, and not necessarily a failing sensor.

So, off we went. The alarm eventually returned. After clearing it a few times it stopped. Same on our return trip yesterday. Our mechanic said removing and replacing the harness required a special Cummins tool. Haven't confirmed this yet.

Cheers,

Bruce

We have also experienced this alarm in our R25 (Cummins: built 10/08 as an '09). While crossing Narragansett Bay in June, the alarm sounded. I immediately put the tug in neutral and shut down the engine. We drifted while I researched the possible problem and observed the guages. All appeared normal, so I restated and off we went. The alarm has not sounded since. I'm not sure if this incident is of the same nature as above situations, but it is another like occurance. Kit and Ginny
