Hi Guy's
Can someone give me an exact length of the 21? Is it 20'10", 21 even or just over. This is important as far as state inspections of commercial vessels are concerned. It would be great if someone could drop a plumb bob off each end to get an exact measurement. Thx guy's.

Glenn,

Sometimes I feel dense; other times I know I'm dense.

How could I measure from one plumb bob line to the other? The boat is in the way. 🙂

If we can get that answered, are you looking for front of bow pulpit to back of swim ladder, or......?

Gene

If its in the garage or on the driveway on the trailer. Let the plumb bob point to the concrete and make a chalk mark, then measure between marks.

Gee, Tuglet is in the water. :? I told you I was dense.

Then I guess you will have use your hand held GPS instead of the plumb bob. Big Grin

Several years ago, even before GPS, one of the rating systems we used for racing sailboats was MORC (Midget Ocean Racing C???). It was what is called a "measurement rule". So there were lots of parameters to measure, including LOA and LWL.

When I saw this query, I had to laugh; it brought back lots of absurd memories. Measurers would spend loads of time trying measure those parameters using plumb bobs, etc. The slightest wavelet would change everything. It was crazy.

Measuring from a trailer is easier, but one has to know what they're measuring and even then some measurements are impossible from the trailer. Measuring from forward tip of deck, or forward edge of pulpit, or even forward edge of hull for LOL; also aft edge of swim platform, or aftermost edge of hull, or aftermost edge of hull for LOL.

LOL, taken with other measurements can yield displacement. LOL can't be measured unless the vessel is afloat. Displacement, afloat, can be much different than a designer's line. We also weighed the vessels.

Glenn's authorities may ask for an esoteric measurement of length. 😀 Wouldn't be the first time.

Sorry for such a treatise, couldn't resist.

Gene

And precision can be an issue; on some trailers one can't run a plumb bob to the ground, or even to two points on the trailer for measuring.

Could be like measuring for USCG documenting, somewhat lacking in precision and logic. 😀

Gene your a hoot. Actually it is the State of Mn. that requires it for commercial vessels. The 21 is my vessel of choice for a commercial venture I'm working on. The state has different fee's depending on vessel length. I really need it to be under 21 even from the tip of the bow to the top aft of the stern or it really gets expensive for all the required inspections and equipment. Do your titles give an exact length? Thx.

capncarp,

floatin my boat, floats my boat

capncarp,

That's probably the nicest thing anyone has ever said about me.

Sorry, my manufacturer's statement of origin lists length as 21' 0".

If you get a MOR upon purchase, I suspect the authorities will insist on the data from it. Sometimes, (most of the time) when buying used you won't get the MOR; the prior owner loses or keeps it.

Without the MOR you might get away with measuring the boat. And if you're lucky it'll measure out at 20.95' 🙂

I doubt that any two boats measure exactly the same. To get a minimum length, measure on a very cold day. Here on the warm water of Lake Lanier in the Georgia summertime my tug probably measures at least an inch over 21'. 😱

Gene

Hi Gene,
That's just what I was looking for. The MOR length is what the state would look at. My 26X is actually 25' 10". The title say's 26 but the techincal company material states 25,10. The state said they excepted that. But, It doesn't matter because it is over their 21' limit anyhow. If I could get the factory to stae 20,11 it might work. But, I don't think thats going to happen. Thx Gene.

capncarp,

Captcarp,

The Certificate of Title on my 1995 R-21 indicates length - 21 ft.
