Exciting News from That's It!!

Thanks to the always amazing Andrew and Kenny of Ranger Tug fame, That's It is thrilled to announce the installation of her brand spanking new Auto Pilot!!! We can hardly wait to try it out tomorrow.

For those of you who were responsible for the acquisition of this amazing device (and you know who you are!!) Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! We are really looking forward to having the auto pilot for this years trip to Desolation Sound. It will make such a difference.

Also a huge thank you to Kenny for replacing our stern thruster. It was a backbreaking job and he did it with grace and humour!!! Gail especially will be thankful to be able to be delivered directly to the dock, although Patrick did a truly amazing job at all times with only a bow thruster since our Easter weekend trip!!

And thank you to our travelling companions Allan, Yvonne and Fergus, who fed and watered us and allowed us to hang out while our boat was being worked on! It was great to see Ted and Donna and their new boat Peregrino here at Des Moines today and catch up with them!!

That's It and Rocinante will be departing Des Moines in the morning and heading for Gig Harbour. The adventure continues!!

The days are passing quickly and I am looking forward with great anticipation to our gatherings in July and September :!:

Now I will not have to worry so much when he is talking on two radios (now it could be three) to the Ranger Tug Armada and Victoria Traffic, and Ranger Jeff on the cell phone, while drinking a coffee and smoking a cigarette!!!!

Here's a very cool video from the cool folks that fun ActiveCaptain. They undertook to redo the electronics on their trawler and this video shows how the Garmin auto pilot seamlessly steers a track (making the turns) that's programmed into the Garmin chart plotter (about half way through the video). It also shows an AIS target coming at them.

I've been thinking about the Raymarine S1000 (costs about $1000, as much as $6000 less than the Garmin I think), but it won't interact with the Garmin and steer the turns of a track on the 5212 or 5215. The Garmin autopilot is the way to go if you can invest the $$.

My boat is a 2008 and has the ray marine system on it. This makes the s1000 perfect because it does work with the c120 plotter. I do agree if you are running a garmin system you should go with the garmin auto pilot.

Can you let us know what model autopilot you installed? Was it the Garmin GPH 10 Autopilot? I'd be curious about where you mounted the components. It lists for $2000, which is only twice the cost of the Raymarine S1000 and it ties into the Garmin which the Ray does not. Am I missing something about the cost of this unit? The Garmin autopilots used to cost thousands more...
