Exhaust Elbow R21

Yes same here. I'm mostly in fresh water but ran it in salt last weekend. Then noticed tons of salt build up and a big crack in the elbow.

Do I need gaskets to replace the part?
 
Hi all, enjoying the thread. Regarding flushing the parts that get salt water, important to realise that fresh water does not wash away much salt unless you let it run for a very long time and even then it does not get it all. The only way to neutralise the salt water is with one of the commercial products like Saltaway. There are others just as good I understand. I have been using it for many years and it is great (and no I don’t have an interest in the product). Another option is hot soapy water but not as good. If you just wash with fresh water, let the boat dry and then wet your finger and rub over the boat and then touch your tongue - you will taste salt. But not if you scrub down with hot soapy water or better still a product like Saltaway. Just my experience after many years of trying to limit the impact of salt water. Cheers, Ian

Can't answer your question on stainless but with respect to your question on replacing the gasket my preference is that when I pull something apart I always "replace" gaskets. Can you re-use them ??? Yes, depending on their condition. Will they seal when reused??? Maybe,,,,not always...so in my opinion, not worth the effort of redoing the work if it does leak, so I would replace.

I have the volvo-penta engine in my R21EC so the set-up would be different than yours. It's a bronze casting on mine. I replaced both the gasket and o-ring when I pulled the exhaust elbow off to work on a corrosion issue on the heat exchanger. For the Volvo penta R21EC guys, I had around 1400hrs when I first pulled mine and it had very little build-up,,,more like a thin layer of soot. A couple of dunks in muriatic acid and flushing, it looked like new. I will pull mine every 400-500hrs going forward to monitor corrosion on the discharge side of the heat exchanger.

I was curious about the gasket because the replacement elbow I see in this thread doesn't look like something that needs a gasket. (http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/p/HGE3520/)

I know I need to just dig in and pull the part and see what's going on and what I need...but I've been out of town and not at the boat right now.

From what I remember seeing, the mixing elbow sits between the hose (on one side of the elbow) and another part that connects to the engine (one the other side of the elbow). Is that "other part" that connects to the engine called the Heat Exchanger? I'm new to a lot of this so still learning.
 
Yanmar 3YM30 parts catalog, figure 8, shows all the components in the exhaust elbow. There is a joint between the mixing elbow and the elbow,exhaust. There are REVERSE THREADS on the joint which you need to be aware of. These 3 parts need to be assembled VERY TIGHTLY. I recommend using a vise. I also replaced all the hoses and clamps. The hardest part was getting the new hose to bend to shape to connect to the water exhaust. Works fine now.

I pulled the exhaust elbow parts today. I’m replacing the upper elbow of course because it’s split across the top like frankenstein’s Head.

The bottom elbow is rusted pretty bad also so i’m going to replace that as well.

If I go OEM, The upper elbow would be about $245 (http://www.oldportmarine.com/store/p243 ... Elbow.html), and the lower for about $170 (http://www.oldportmarine.com/store/p245 ... Elbow.html), for a total of $415, assuming I could reuse the riser between them.

Or I could go aftermarket stainless steel and get the whole kit which includes all elbows, gasket,and riser which is a big cost savings for $297 (https://hdimarine.net/product/gm-kit/)

Questions:
Are these both reputable dealers? And has anynone had issues with these aftermarket parts? I’d love to save the money with the kit and the stainless steel sounds like the right way to go (but I don’t really know the quality of the SS. And I’m assuming it’s made in China?).

I’ve read up on the reviews of both OEM (iron?) and Aftermarket (stainless) and of course hear both sides of the coin. I’m sure either will do me right, but i’d love to hear from the tug pros here. Thank you.
 
I have fitted the HDI SS Package. Excellent. It is an upgrade to the Yanmar replacement, fits perfectly, works th3 same and looks much better. From my perspective the way to go. Fisho.
 
I bought a used 2008 R21-EC from Portland with only 140 hours but the elbow was rusted out and only lasted a year before it basically split in half. I think it sat in moisture for years before I bought it because I can't imagine what else caused that. I replaced it myself along with the manifold which was pretty rusty also.

I saw the stainless steel ones also but the price seemed way too low to be a good grade of SS. I imagine that thing would cost a fortune if it was solid stainless steel wouldn't it? I went with the cast iron replacement and so far so good. It did start to show rust specs on the outside after only a day though!!

Can someone tell me again why the stainless steel units (both the elbow and exhaust - pts 124070-13520 and 128370-13610) are said to not work? My Yanmar dealer in Tacoma is recommending the SS replacement.
on this posting, Eric, way back in 2015, said "That stainless steel elbow is not appropriate for installation on our 3YM20/3YM30 Yanmar engines due to the height from the waterline of the exhaust manifold. You must use the cast iron high riser mixing elbow. ..."
