Exhaust Flapper Failure

My exhaust flapper is sprung open allowing trash into the pipe. Is this serious or just a nice to have accessary?

On my R27 I was able to flip the flap over so it would stay shut at rest. After a couple of years it still stays closed. Check if you can remove it and flip it over when reinstalling.

I believe the flapper is useful to protect from on rushes of water being pushed into the exhaust (such as passing wakes) and possible being pushed over the elbow causing potential damage.

Replace the flapper retaining screws at least every other year with quality stainless They go fast.
