My 1st mate and I were discussing the issue of the cabin door being locked with the key and could a person inside the cabin unlock it just as you can with a house front door.

Not being on the boat it was not possible to determine the answer.

Does anyone know the answer ?

R25, yes you can unlock the door from inside once locked from the outside. Just a standard dead bolt with handle inside to unlock. Hope that helped.

Okay, what's going on here? It sounds like you want to lock the first mate inside the cabin to prevent shopping for things while at port. It won't work. Even if the lock kept her in, she could get out the front hatch from the v-berth. I put a hasp on the outside of the door and piled bricks on the hatch, no knickknacks since then. 😀

Of course, it could be the other way round....
