Bruce Moore was kind enough to mail me his Garmin 5212 v5.2 software update SD card. I used this yesterday to update my Garmin 5212's v5.1 to v5.2. Apart from one quick call to Andrew's cell phone the update install proceeded and completed without issues. It was in fact a flawless install.

Calling Andrew was for two reasons

1. To ensure that he had no issues with me updating to v5.2. You never know if a software update introduces undesirable side affects. Andrew had installed v5.1 and I was curious why v5.2 was not on my system already. Presumably this was because at the time Andrew did the v5.1 the v5.2 wasn't released.

2. I had difficulty in having the Garmin device discover the SD card. I had placed card in the slot and booted up the Garmin but it did not indicate it had discovered the SD card. I was puzzled as other postings here said it should have. Andrew said that with Garmin booted simply pull card out to disengage its contacts and then reinsert it. That did the trick. 🙂

So here are the steps I recorded for myself.

1. Power up the Garmin 5212 (and Autopilot if present)
2. Insert SD card into slot under the left located dust panel flip lid. Push card in until it clicks and holds its position. The card's label should be facing starboard and its contacts facing to port and the write-lock switch on top. (Write lock switch is usually a different color to the SD card's body color, and in my case it was yellow)
3. The Garmin should now auto discover the SD card. If not, then push on it and then pull it out and reinsert it.
4. The Garmin screen should now display "Update Software" and "Manage Card" buttons and the main window should display "Data Card" and "Software Update Card".
5. Pressing the "Update Software" button will start the software update process.
6. Follow the on screen instructions.
7. Expect the complete process to take close to 10 minutes.
8. When the software update process completes the Garmin device will reboot.
9. Now check that the software was updated by navigating the menus starting at the Home screen via Configure->System->System Information. This will show all the gory details and in my case it showed v5.2.
10. Remove the SD card by pushing it in slightly and letting it release. If you have sausage sized fingers it may be difficult grabbing the card to pull it out. 😉

During the install process I captured a series of screen shots. These can be viewed by going to http://gallery.me.com/barrysharp#100358

The last few screen shots I found interesting -- especially the one displaying historic data. Geeeeesh - I hadn't notice I had pushed the R25 to 19.3 kts or some 22.21 mph. That must have been WOT or close to it. 😀

BTW -- Does anyone know if the "Unit ID" value represents the Garmin device's Serial Number ? This is info displayed in the window at Home->Configure->System->System Information. Thanks... 🙂
