External holding tank monitor

Just spent 6 weeks with my 27 in the Florida keys. Outstanding trip. Trailered the boat down and back from New Jersey.

One issue was monitoring the holding tank. Tried to observe the level by looking at the tank. Even used a flash light and rocking the boat with no success. Maybe it was me but does anyone have any suggestions?
I would ideally like a hand held liquid external sensor that I could manually move up and down the external tank surface

The electronic holding tank sensor was giving me trouble and although I finally fixed it, to end my frustration and distrust of the original system, Peter at Winter Island Yacht Yard installed a backup, almost fail proof, system for me.

I have the 30" four tank unit with the holding tank purge option. I will eventually connect up the water and fuel tanks for a backup gauging system for them as well.
