Help!

Tug was running fine. then maybe two hours later went to start and got the message "Smart Start Aborted" or words to that effect. No attempt to start by engine. Happened a few days ago at boatyard, then started right up. Now it is doing it again. Any ideas?

I would start by checking main ground connections. If your tug still has the braided ground strap running to engine I would replace with a proper ground cable using lugs and make sure the point of connection at engine is completely free of paint, etc. When I replaced mine I used a Dremel tool with wire brush to really clean before reconnecting. In addition, I added a independent ground cable direct from start battery to engine block. A weak ground can create a lot of interesting issues.
Good luck,
Mike

If it's an intermittent problem I'd agree with the prior comment regarding making sure you have a good ground. Using a pair of jumper cables for a direct ground from battery to engine would be a simple way of testing prior to setting off on a wiring project.

Thanks so much, I shall try this for sure! You guys are great !!

I don't know anything about a Cummings but if it has a neutral safety switch I would sure check that. Your set-up may be electronic so my thought would not help.

Rob, good point by Pat. If, after you have confirmed ground leads are all good, the neutral safety switch is an easy check. Our R25 is also an 09' with Cummins 150 and yes they do have a neutral safety switch. It is located right on top of the transmission and has two leads coming off. I am not on the boat right now (will be tomorrow) but if I recall correctly it basically sits right under the shift arm or next to it. Disconnect the two wires, attach jumper and make certain tranny is in neutral as engine will start in gear with jumper attached.

Pat and Mike -

You win the contest! I checked the neutral safety start switch and that was indeed the problem! Now I need to figure out what that part number is. Guess I call Ranger.

You guys rule! Tug runs like a champ again - just without the safety switch 🙂

Rob, just looked the switch up in the Cummins parts manual. Mercruiser part number 879150033. Google and I think you can find it cheaper than going through Mercruiser. I am 99.99% certain this is the correct number, but for that .01% you may wish to confirm.

Thanks so much. I spoke with Richard at Ranger Tugs and he got me the part number and then found me one on Ebay, but thanks for looking. Guess I'll be up and running soon.

Oh, and BTW, that is the right part number!!
