We have a 2012 25sc that has been put together with an unfamiliar (to me) fastner that looks like an allen wrench but isn't. What is it and where so I get one so I can tighten things as needed.

Thanks. Bluebirdtug

It is called a Robertson drive. You can pick up bits for it in any hardware store, Home Depot or Lowes. There are two sizes, get a few of each.

BluebirdTug: When our R-25 was delivered to us in late 2009 Andrew was very proud to present us with a screw driver that had multiple screw bits. He exclaimed that the provided bits would allow us to deal with EVERY screw type used on the boat. Over the past few years I have to say he was absolutely right. I've yet to come across a screw on our boat that this very useful tool cannot handle. It seems that Ranger Tugs no longer provides this as part of the boat sale... shame... 🙁 If I can remember next time on the boat I'll jot down the make/model of the screw driver and post back here.

Hopefully you do have the special tools for the windlass and the one needed to unscrew the waste tank's pump out screw lid. 😉

Mike properly named the fasteners. Tis Canadian in origin. I just call em square drive or square bits. Canadians seem to get all worked up if you don't use the correct honorific. Must be something to do with being shirt tail British

On the Redneck Riviera we call them "Hatteras Screws" 'cause that was the first line of boats to use them around here. They do seem to strip easily but most stainless screws regardless of style are a bit soft. We bought several small bags of phillips head stainless screws when a local business went under. Call me a butt head but I change them out if I have to remove one. It is only a personal preference and I am sure that one is about as good as the other. Lowes has a nice set of right angle drivers with the common sizes you will run into. The set comes in handy for some of the tighter fits on the "Tugs." Especially on the throttle cable anchors on the R-29.

The Fasteners we use on the Rangers and Cutwaters are a Robertson Tip, We use 4 different sizes they range from a #0 to #3. As all the other posts have stated they are available at Lowes, Home Depot, and any hardware store.
