Faux Teak/SeaDek, etc.

Having transitioned from a small sailboat to an R-23, I've noted a distressing lack of external teak... maintenance, I know.

Consequently, I've been thinking of adding some Flexiteek2G (or similar) or SeaDek to the cockpit horizontal surfaces in our little R-23. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with any of these products?

I have u-deck, similar to what you mention, on my swim platform and cockpit. I don't see why it wouldn't work on a horizontal surface.

We have Raptor Deck on our boat (it's another single-cell foam product) and absolutely love it. Looks great, feels great, cleans easily, and provides excellent footing. Dan, Raptor Deck's founder and president, started the business making kits for racing sail boats. Fortunately he has made a strong move into power boats, including the entire Fluid Motion fleet.

There is a kit available for the R-23 as well as videos for patterning and installation.

Highly recommended.

Does the Raptor solution require professional installation or is it DIY friendly?

SUMB44: I have the Raptor product for my R29 CB's cockpit. It was installed by Raptor and as I watched the installation I saw that a DIY was possible. Like any flat panel product with backing adhesive, the panel laying down should be carefully done to avoid captured air bubbles etc. Start at one end and careful align the panel and slowly peel off the protective backing plastic and firmly press the panels down. After all done, use a 'carpet roller' device to run over the panels to ensure that they are securely stuck down.

I agree with Barry. I watched the install on our boat. It's a straight forward process. I'm confident I could have done it. The key is having the boat properly patterned (as most fluid motion boat are) and then following the step-by-step process. They even support DIY folks who make their own patterns.

Cleaning is important prep for the adhesive. Most pieces aren't very large and are easily aligned. Go slow piece by piece. You can even lift and realign, if need be, before rolling.

I've been thinking about this for our 2012 R-29, as well. It's the rainy season here in the PNW, and I'm finding it impossible to keep the cockpit clean when shoes are always wet. Have you found the RaptorDeck to clean up nicely?

I was having the same cockpit experience as you, even if Anacortes is slightly (if at all) less soggy than Gig Harbor this winter. Since the decking was installed I haven't changed a thing about my footwear cleanliness, yet the cockpit looks show-ready at all times with nothing more than a quick spray-down with fresh water and use of a stiff bristle brush, even though I've been in and out of the engine room for various projects.

Count me very satisfied!
