Fender Stowage on a R21-EC

I’ve been contemplating purchasing a Ranger Tugs R21-EC for a while and I’m going through the gear I have and would need to get.

I would like some feedback on fender size – I think a 5 ½ “ by 20” fender would be perfect for the boat – but with only so much stowage space wondered if they would fit in the fender storage areas available under the cup holders in the boat's stern seating area.

I’d like to hear what Andrew, Ranger’s Rep. and current owners have to say about fenders.

I currently plan on trailering but will be tying up to both floating and fixed docks and pilings.

In my 3rd season with the R21EC M/Y Calypso,
laying in boston harbor, I found most docks and slips are equaling height to the gunnels.
Best protection is utilizing 9" Gloucester ball type fenders. They just do the job better.
I store 2 on the stern rail resting on the swim platform, another up on the bow.

I have fenders that fit inside the locker and they do not get a lot of use. The size is hard to find but it is out there. I think Boaters world had them on a center isle sale a couple of years back. I have larger fenders that are snapped to the rails and they catch the heavy work. I am not one for dockside and like to anchor out but the fenders got a lot of use and abuse in lock walls and are far from pretty any more. When transiting a river I tried to always use the same side and station in the lock and that made rigging easy as I went from one lock to another. Not a easy life for a fender and think the working fenders are six inch. The lockers will store two in each side and some extra lines too. Bob Heselberg in Eatonville Wa

Hello Mark,

I think the fenders you were talking about should fit in the storage locker. The fenders we sell with the safety kits from the factory are made by Polyform. The model type is a G3. 5.5" x 19". Hope this helps.

I'm lazy. I have fenders tied to both sides of the bow pulpit and to the railing in the cockpit. I just pull (swing) them inside after I depart the dock. If I stop somewhere and I'm not using a dock I throw the ones in the cockpit back over the side and leave the two forward on the side deck.

I do the same on my CS30.

I never have to adjust a fender unless I'm at a different dock height. I've gone for years without untieing or retieing fenders.

I really am lazy. 🙂

Herb, nice bow set up. I see you're abandoning us (R21ECs) for the R27. Good choice. I like it a lot. But, as a single hander I'd probably go with the R25SC, easier for me to handle.

If my wife was a boat person, I'd think seriously about the R29. But, she thinks the Mainship 390 is almost enough.

I'll probably keep my R21EC for awhile. I thought depreciation on a car was bad. The market for used R21ECs is horrible. I'm not willing to spend $10,000 to use a boat for approx. 14 months. Makes it difficult to trade up.
