Last season, at our home Marina mounted two large G6 fenders horizontally to the pier, to save the wife the effort each time coming and going with fender deployment.

What I noticed with the G6 is that it marred the Gelcoat badly, since they were fixed to the pier and boat would move. So those are going away this season and will go back to 3 vertical G5 fenders.

What do people find the larger ballon type fender useful for? I see them, not quite sure of their purpose.

Thanks
Joe

Hi Joe,

On our former R27-OB, which had an abundance of stowage area, I not only stowed our (2) extra G-5 fenders but also (2) A-2 fenders.

I found the A-2 fenders worked extremely well when rafting with a 2nd boat.

Hope this helps!

For our R31, we have a couple of large A-3 buoy fenders to take along as needed. Round fenders tend to be preferred for going through the locks on the Columbia. And I like using a round fender when I reverse off a dock using a forward spring line The A-3 provides good protection as I pivot the bow against the dock for that maneuver. It's bulky, but storing one on the swim step works well for me. When I took both of them for locking through, I carried them on top of the boat.

My R-31 CB has a claret red hull. When I took delivery of her from Winter Island Yacht Yard in Salem MA, Peter Haywood suggested that I contact Maine Coast Marine Products and buy a set of their fender covers. He claimed they were the best ever, the softest he has ever seen and would not mar the hull. He was 100% correct. They are unbelievably soft and available with monograming which I did option for. They have not marred my hull. I should also add that I am extremely fussy and keep the hull very well waxed with Collonite as recommended by Ranger. Finally, every time I go down to the boat I hit the hull with a nice spray of fresh water including soaking the fender covers. The boat is kept in salt water in CT. Whenever I go out and return back to home I wash her with the Starbrite Marine Soap which is also recommended by Ranger. So far, my hull looks bristol..!

The ball fenders are good for filling the gap where the bow flares out.

Ball fenders are great when rafting. Your or other boats hulls may flare and you will need that extra distance.
