Each year, my water filters (especially the one draining the 40 gal tank) clog with mold/slime especially after using the RV antifreeze even if I add vodka/gin as a preservative. I am located in mid-Teaxas where our winters are pretty mild. Is there a sugar in the RV antifreeze? Do I need these inline water filters if all i do with the water is bathe and wash dishes(no drinking)?? Could I remove all filters? thanks for the help.

I read in "Practical Sailor" magazine that one can get mold/slime growth in diluted RV antifreeze. Such can be the case in the water tank. I have noted an accumulation white "gunk" in the water line filters during the spring antifreeze flushing of the water system. There are filters some Tugnuters, myself included, have removed such as the filters at each end of the sprayer hoses. The sink hose on some boats also have an anti-back flow valve that can be removed. You have to undo both ends of the sprayer hoses to get at the filters. I would leave the screen at the output end of the sprayer in place. In addition there is a screen in the water pump that has to be cleaner periodically.

There is further information on this topic contained the Tugnut data base.
