I just did the 50 hour oil & filter change. Couldn't find approved oil locally so I bought Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5/40 synthetic on the web...got a free Ferrari hat! Went like a charm......not typical.....feels good. Now I have to decide if I want to do the gear oil change. The book says drain it. Has anyone pumped it out from the filler?

Here is a link to a oil extractor that works great. http://www.jmsonline.net/moe-033330.htm

You want to suck out the oil from the gearbox from the dipstick. After you have it all out you want to pull the filter screen and clean with new oil and maybe a old tooth brush. Use Delo 400 for your gearbox oil. No exceptions.

As far as engine oil goes I would check with yanmar to see what there approved oils are. I have done all the service on my ranger 29 several times now and would not use any oil other then what yanmar says i can run in mine. The castrol Syntec 5w-40.

Hi Phil,
I just changed my oil also. I couln't get the yanmar oil from any of the local yanmar service guys either. I went with
Mobil-1 which is approved and on the yanmar list if you look in their manual. Besides their "approved" list you will also see a list of minimum approved standards that they want the oil to meet or exceed. I would say if your oil exceeds those standards you will be okay. If the letters are above the standard then that is even better. Mobil one is APi- SN which is better than SM. I bought it at Napa Auto Parts and it happened to be on sale for 4.69 a quart and they will take back your old oil.

Mike & Stuart, Were you able to reuse the gasket from the gear filter?

Hi

I was able to buy the oil at Walmart.

Yes you can re-use the gasket. When you get the two bolts loose be aware the it is spring loaded. Not much pressure but just wanted to say so that everything does not fly out on you causing to to wonder how it goes back in. It is all very easy.

It will be normal to see metal chunks in the filter. This is all part of the break in.

Our new R27 "Little Debbie" has 25 hours now so I will be looking at the 50 hour service in the near future. I can handle the engine oil/filter change and marine gear oil change and screen cleaning. The Yanmar BY2 op manual also says that the prop shaft alignment and shift cable adjustment needs to be checked, what is everyone doing about this?

Howard

To check your shaft alignment you need a .005 feeler gauge. There will be 4 bolts holding the shaft to the engine. Remove these bolts and then use your .005 feeler gauge to check all the way around between the shaft and engine coupler. It needs to be .005 or less.
You should be just fine. If you were out you would be feeling it in the steering wheel. If it is out then making the adjustments are a bit more tricky. If you have never done it then I would have a pro do it. It requires adjusting the motor mounts.
They do a really good job at the factory setting up the alignment from the get go!

Have fun!
