The 25 classic is not a fishing machine. But we manage to stock the freezer every year.

Shrimpming is a little easier.

Dan,
That’s a beautiful fish. How big was it?
Fishing for halibut in AK is on my bucket list!

That is one BIG catch..... how long a struggle was it to net this one ? Well done. 🙂

It was 51 inches which according to the IPHC chart equates to 64lbs live weight.

We were only fishing in 150 ft of water so It only took a few minutes to get it within harpoon range. Then it took it another 15 minutes or so after harpooning before it was tame enough to deal with it. I don't fight with them in the cockpit any more. They don't get invited into the cockpit until they are played out.

That's a nice haul Dan. I plan to be in the Sound at the end of next month. I hope you left some shrimp for me. Do you use a pot puller or do you hand line your pots?

We use a puller. Should still be plenty of shrimp. How are silvers doing in Resurrection Bay?

I've just started crabbing and fishing from my R29 CB. Crabbing is going well. The fishing requires a lot more learning and knowing what gear is best at a reasonable cost. Have two rods now (UGLY rods). One reel (PENN) has a foot-counter. I succumbed to getting a Scotty down rigger and am learning to use it. So far I'm frustrated with the line pulling out from the 'gripper' as I lower my 12 lb cannon-ball. The flasher obviously places a big drag on the line. Have been told to kink the line and twist it a bit and place that in the 'gripper' to avoid the line from being inadvertently pulled off.

With 3 days of fishing I've not caught any fish, except for a Flounder or two near shore line.

I've fished at 30, 50, 100, 150 feet so far.

I'm using a spooner lure without bait.

I'm also learning how to interpret the Garmin's Sonar + Fish display.

On the R29 the aft cabin TV can be used if turned toward the cockpit and with it HDMI connection to the helm's 7612xsv Sonar+Fish, the rear looking TV display becomes very useful.

Hey... it's fun and grandson is well and truly hooked on this fishing activity.... as I am now as well.

nice!
manual downrigger or electric?

Electric..... had to purchase a 6" riser for the down rigger's base to allow the boom to clear the gunwale railing. With the 12 lb weight ready and swinging the boom out the boom would be slightly obstructed by the railing. It worked this way for awhile but got tired of having to help the boom over the railing each time. The 12 lb x the 60" boom lent is quite a large moment arm. ...plus if that 12 lb cannon-ball were to swing in earnest toward the boat a hole might well appear. 😳

Dan,
After a promising start in early July fishing for Silvers in Resurrection Bay has been slow. We picked up 4 so far, 2 mooching, and 2 trolling. There are a ton of brown jellyfish out there which makes trolling difficult. I'm headed back down tonight and hopefully there will be a few more around this weekend. I've been using herring with a 10" flasher when we're trolling. If anyone has a better method, I'm all ears, as I'm new to this and I'll take any pointers I can get.

If you’re still having problems with the clip release make sure you’re using the Scotty Power Grip clip (not the one with the black dot. This has a black line across the clip) Slide your fishing line back beyond the black line and make sure the U-shaped snap at the top is pushed up. This is where the thick line which attaches the clip to the ball is located) It clicks into place.

You shouldn’t have any problem with inadvertent release.

FYI. I use two downriggers on my R27. It’s been a great Chinook season.

Drift north end of Crafton Island anywhere between 80 and 300 feet of water. Either mooch or jig between 40 and 60 feet. Or right under the boat when you see them swimming by. It's still a little early. Took us about four hours to limit. Mostly due to wasted time taking pinks off the hook and getting back in the water. Caught about three pinks per silver. We just use a 3oz jig that looks like a minnow. Color doesn't seem to matter.

You can troll if you prefer but we find it much easier drift fishing. Plus you pick up the odd chicken now and then.

We fished for halibut for 3 hours near Calisto Head and picked up 1 small chicken, then headed over to Cheval Narrows for silvers. We picked up 7 in 3 hours of mooching and lost a few others before we ran out of herring. Things seem to be picking up in Resurrection Bay.

Awesome. Glad you got into them.

We just got back from another crazy beautiful week on the Sound. 42 days on the water so far this summer and I think we've been rained on three times. Wild stock salmon might be a bit late due to no water in the creeks. Pinks just now showing up at creeks where we normally see them early July.
