Hi, I'm both new to this forum and to tugs and have never bought a factory new vessel before.

After quite a while of researching my 1st mate and I are close to a final decision on the r-23 as a new purchase/order but have some questions regarding (custom) order flexibility.

-Is it even possible to order without some standard features or replacing standard features with different tech/brands?

Specifically I'm wondering if it's possible to order without:
-toilet (we'd prefer a composting toilet)
-motor (prefer to choose an OB on our own)

Thanks!

The R-23 has turned out to be a very popular boat and production is extremely busy. I was told that some additional wiring could be done but upper level management put a halt on additional or custom work. My dealer will do the installation of a solar panel and spot light, not being offered as options currently.

I also wanted to remove the marine head and have an Air Head composting toilet installed which I have had great success with on my current boat. The problem is it won't fit in the head because of its depth and the door won't close. I settled for a porta-potty and still hope to covert the black tank to fresh water.

As far as the engine goes, you may get the one you want but my guess would be that you will pay significantly more having it done after market and possibly void some warranty somewhere

Very Interesting info sleepyboat. I am probably a year or two away from ordering a R-23. I have started a wish list of options that I think I would like on the boat that I would hope would be able to factory installed including hopefully putting in an electric flush toilet for the first mate. But we shall see.

What Solar Panel are you getting installed? I see on RT's Spec PDF that they do have a 90watt solar panel listed as an available option.

As I stated in a previous post, this is a 23 ft boat and Ranger has put options in it that you just don’t see in vessels this size. I will never use the shower and the head takes up a lot of space but you don’t have much room, if that makes any sense. If you are looking for options, you might want to consider a 25.

The solar panel is not an option but having had one on my 27, it is something I have come to count on as is the radar. The engineers have not given the blessing to factory installed solar so they shipped it with the boat (which arrived yesterday) and my dealer will install it. I believe they are still using Kyocera (135-140 watt) panels and a Sun Saver controller (maybe).

Ranger appears to be in the process of revising their website. A solar panel is no longer listed as an option on the 23.

I'm not sure where that spec sheet came from, maybe a dealer put it together but solar was never an option on the 23 as is the spot light not being offered on boats 27 and less any longer. Go to the home page upper right corner, to links, Ranger Tug Factory, R23, build your boat. that's official.

Having been involved in mfg. operations, I learned one thing. It's more efficient and economical to build a standard product. I also learned folks wanted custom features, but still expected standard pricing of the basic product. Costs increase and efficiency decreases when additions, and/or deletions enter the equation. Just look at the evolution of the automotive industry. At one time, an option(s) required a special order. As demand for an item increased, it was added as standard and basic product costs increased. Then, options became packages, not single items. And still, one might not get the desired option in a package along with several unwanted items.

I'm continually frustrated by not being able to get exactly what I want. However, I've resigned myself to being frustrated, or just accepting reality. I'd love to have an opening windshield on my R21EC. Opening all the hatches doesn't ventilate that small cabin sufficiently for GA summers. The overhead head hatches open to side instead of fore to aft, limiting airflow. The AC unit works, but not well enough for sunny days with temp in the mid-90 plus range. But, that is what the R21EC is.

I've considered the R23. But, it doesn't have an opening windshield; I'm not sure of the hatches orientation. If I get really serious those factors will affect my decisions. My Rosborough RF-246 had an opening windshield and plenty of other ventilation; it also had a super HVAC unit. I found I liked a lot about the things twin O/B's offered. However, a ten year old boat is a ten year old boat. If not properly maintained, (and maybe even then) O/B's are horrendously expensive to maintain and repair. And, a lot of things on O/B's aren't readily observable, even by a qualified marine surveyor. Of course, a new R23 with a new O/B engine is a different animal. But, O/B systems are really complicated compared to the diesels. The lift/tilt systems alone are an engineering feat.

I've watched Ranger (Fluid Motions) grow over the past eight years that I've been aware of them. IMO,they're best out there at what they do. Check with some of the other mfg.(s) ordering process.

That spec sheet still appears under "Download Specification PDF", however, under "Build Your Boat - Select Your Options" the solar panel is not offered. "...options may change at any time" is the qualifier used by Ranger and many others.

FYI for the R-23 build a boat function on the website they now list Solar Panel, 90w with control panel as an option for $900.

I see that now and my 23 just came in last Friday. my dealer has ordered it separately and is soon to arrive. thanks for the FYI.

sleepyboat: Can't wait to see pictures and hear about your 23! Enjoy!
