For several years I've always folded my helmsman seat up and forward when leaving the boat at the dock. Thus the seat can stay in this position for extended periods at times.

I've noticed that because of this the seat covering has started to permanently crease in places. I suspect that over time these creases may very well develop into cracks and mean replacing the seating material to regain its new look. Because of this I'm now avoiding folding the seat up and forward unless needed for extra galley countertop surface area.

What are others doing to prolong the life of the helmsman's seat material? Do you apply some lotion periodically to keep it looking clean and soft ?

Thanks... 🙂

I fold mine forward, but let the backrest rest on top of the wheel not folded into the seat. And you are leaving your boat for extended periods of time???? Shame on you!

Same, fold forward and have seat back lay on top of the wheel. The only modification I have made, to the seat, was to add a 2-1/4" riser to the base. Saw how the modification was added by the factory to a MY 2010 R25 (Jeff Marcum's 2010 Get-Aweigh) and really liked the additional visibility it added especially when running in a bow up condition.

Mike & Mike: Thanks... good idea about not folding the seat completely like you described. Sometimes I feel constipated...

Why fold the seat. I just leave mine looking like a seat.

I only leave mine up when we are living on the boat for a long period of time and need the counter space when at the dock or anchored out.

I have folded mine up most of it's life (5 1/2 years) and no damage but have had the same concerns as it sure appears it could cause damage. Considered making some sort of temporary cushion for the wheel since seat folds forward much more than needed. My main concern has been that the otherwise well made seat has too little padding in it and can become uncomfortable after extended seating. I tend to stand for a few minuted every so often to releave the "strain on my six". I have alco considered making some sort of extra padded cushion for the seat to aid in this issue and perhaps help prevent damage to the seat when folded up.
