Quick question, mes amis:

I was told that a long shaft was essential for a kicker motor on my R-21-EC, so that's what I bought. Since that motor is no longer usable, I am looking for a replacement.

Here's my question for owners of R-21s (or for those other salty dawgs who might know the answer):

Do you think a short shaft kicker motor would work on my 21-footer, the Red Ranger? Or is a long shaft essential?

If you have a short shaft kicker motor on your R-21, how does it work? I also want to use the kicker on my dingy, so a short shaft would work much better for that.

Any help from the Tugnut masses would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi,

Not sure if this will help, but this bracket will allow you to drop the trolling motor much lower in the water than with a normal transom mount trolling motor mount. You might be able to get away with the short shaft engine. Maybe...

Worht a look. I have not ordered anything from the following website, just an example of the mount.

Good luck,

Let us know what works out for you.

I had one of these Garelick mounts on my sailboat...got it from WM It worked great, with no problems. I had a 4.5hp 2-stroke Merc on it. It was very stable and easy to pull up. The lift-assist springs were so robust that you almost had to push it down and it came up real easy. Not sure where I would mount it on my R21 Classic, but the EC's have a little more vertical transom. The mount is adjustable for vertical transom angle.

I am considering a mount on the swim platform. Just hate to drill holes in the hull.....

I have a spring-mounted Sea-Dog kicker motor mount, and with the locking arm placed on the top setting I think a short shaft should do just fine.

One of the things I noticed in looking at the mount was that the aluminum locking arm had become bent so the locking pin couldn't reach the lowest two notches. I am not sure how it got bent because it's safely located between the motor mount and the stern.

In any event, I had to disassemble part of the mount to remove the locking arm. But I took it to a local welder and he straightened it out and put some additional reinforcement on it.

But he said if it bends again, I should replace it with a custom-made stainless steel piece instead of aluminum.

In the meantime, I'm still searching for a good, used kicker motor (the max rating for my dingy is a 6 hp). My 2.5-week trip up the Sunshine Coast begins July 15 so the clock is ticking, mes amis. If anyone knows of a reliable motor for sale, please send me a private message.

Thanks,

JtheK
