Fresh water Anode selection

I am working on replacing all my anodes on my 2017 R29LE for fresh water. For the transom anode Ranger Tug uses a zinc 9x4x1/2. I can't seem to find that size in magnesium. Can find 6x4x1/2 or 12x6x1/2. I want to confirm that the larger size is suitable 12x4x1/2 for performance. Also, I found magnesium for the generator, trim tabs, and prop shaft. The thrusters only come in aluminum and the D4 260 Volvo anodes available are only in zinc. Will I have issues if all anodes are magnesium with the engine anode zinc and thruster aluminum?

Try Boatzincs.com. We’ve been buying zincs from them for 12 years and have always had good luck with what we need. Check out there websight and call them. I’d be surprised if they couldn’t help you out.

Concur with Jim on boatzincs.com. Check them out if you haven’t. I just changed all my anodes and I boat in fresh water.

Hull anode: the one that fits perfectly is aluminum. I bought the Mini Divers Dream Magnesium Anode and used a grinder to shave off 1/8” the opposite ends of the two slots because the c/c is a bit more. It’s a little smaller than the default anode but I had almost no wear on the alum one over 7 months so I thought I’d try this out. I will monitor. It’s easy enough to change in the water but I can also haul my boat on the trailer for a quick swap out if needed. There is a larger one in magnesium but I wasn’t sure it was going to fit properly.

Side-Thruster anodes available only in aluminum. These were the most consumed of all my anodes.

My purchasing dealer installed zinc anodes vs aluminum on my trim tabs and there was zero wear on them. Zinc is useless in fresh water. My side thruster anodes were worn so I don’t think mixing materials on different components is going to affect performance but I’d see if you could find alum or magnesium for your engine.

Boatzincs.com provides weight for each anode. My wear analysis was based on weight of material left not a visual inspection.

As an aside, I didn’t find the engine anodes on my boat (2019 R29) Apparently Volvo phased those out.

I have a 2018 C-28 with year-round moorage in fresh water, but plan to spend time this spring and summer the PNW Sound. What material should I be using for anodes? For the C28 what is considered a complete set of anodes, and are their anodes on the bow and stern thrusters? Thanks in advance!

If you want to use in both types of water without changing them when you do, aluminum is the only material that will work. In my case, I was not able to find a pencil anode for my generator in aluminum so I installed a magnesium one (fresh water) and bought zinc if I use the boat in salt water.

On the Tugnuts home page, there should be a link for a spreadsheet for all the maintenance parts for your boat. The anodes that your boat needs are listed there.
