Help! Someone! Anyone!

Starry Night is a two year old R 25. We are having increasing difficulty filling the fresh water tank: almost as if the tank is full and the water starts coming back out of the inlet (sometimes explosively, which is funny unless you are in the path...) As far as we know the vent is not plugged. We have to fill the tank at a madenly slow rate

How do we see if either the vent line or the fill line have gotten kinked or something?

Before tearing away at walls to find filler hoses, let's ask a basic question: Just How do you know your fresh water tank is almost empty? My 2008 did not have any fresh water gauge. Does your 2009? Is it properly calibrated?? If not, you really have no way of knowing your usage of water. Maybe, just maybe, the water is jumping back out of the overflow because you're half full or more, when you start. I do know that, towards the end of filling the tank, one does have to slow down, even "maddeningly" slow, or it will spurt out. So, it's just possible, that you're re-filling a half full tank.

Best thing you can do is revisit the thread where they showed cutting the hole in the v-berth bulkhead so you can see the water tank...
Next thing I would do is remove the cap from the fresh water fill port and then using an air hose is too blow the vent line backwards - gently - to prove that it is not clogged...
Once you know that, then run the water out of the tank through the sinks until the pump begins to surge and start the refill process from a known empty tank...

Thanks. Hoping Jeff and Andrew will chime in, or show us exactly where to make that cut......really don't like cutting holes in our boat!

Sparky, eliminate Step 1 and do the others.

Have fun in Seattle! Just keep Joe under control, there used to be submarines out there!

Sparky, I don't have time to search at the moment, but the thread is on here and there are photos... Someone else should chime in with the details to aid my failing memory... This is one of my items on this winter's layup hit list...

And I worded my message poorly - as was pointed out - blow the vent line and empty and refill the tank , FIRST...

I usually like to empty the tank prior to filling as discribed above for another reason. I do not usually use enough water to keep the tank "fresh". Some of that is realted to the warm & humid envirnoment here in south. Starting from a known empty tank is better. However, that said, it sometimes seems like I have the same reaction as you have discribed. Does not seem to matter how slow I fill.

Here is my thought. You have owned the boat for nearly two years and didn't have the problem until now. That eliminates a few questions for me to ask.

First thing I would check, just as mentioned earlier in this thread is to make sure the tank is really empty and not full. Empty the tank completly and then re-fill. Sometimes when a tank is overfilled and maybe a little extra slack in the vent line, it will hold water and act as a pea trap not allowing the tank to breathe as you are filling. You could cut an access hole in your cabinet to access the vent if needed and try pulling some slack out of it. You can also remove the carpeted panel directly forward of the helm and view the vent line by looking aft. The cabin heater can also come out and reach the vent line going directly to the tank. Should be a pretty easy fix.
