It was recently was recommended that I use Stanadyne fuel additive when I had my Volvo D6 serviced by Coastal Marine Engine. They said that Volvo recommended it. I bought a 5 gal container which was a lot cheaper way to go. The first thing I realized was that I needed a easy way to calculate the amount of additive when I toped off the boat. The result was a spread sheet to do the work for me. I also found a Stihl mixing bottle that had a nice spout and 100ml graduations. Hopefully this makes life easy and no hassles to continue adding the Stanadyne. While I was at it, since we travel to Canada in the summer I added a liter $CAN to gallon $US.

Does anyone else use additive and do you have procedures that make life easier?

I use Stanadyne as well. Pints by the case on Amazon aren’t a whole lot more than the 5 gallons at fisheries.

$314 shipped from Circle C Country Supply

Thanks for clarifying that Volvo Penta recommends Stanadyne. Can you point me to this recommendation so I can add it to my maintenance manual?

I clarify my statement to be the Volo authorized shop said the Volvo rep recommended it.

Not particular to Volvo engines, it is recommended to use fuel additive because of low sulfur diesel fuel being sold today

Guys at Tri-County Diesel in Bellingham also recommended using fuel additive for this reason

Appreciate the clarification. I was hoping that Volvo Penta came out with something specific for its engines. Research I conducted in the past was very confusing on the value of additives - seemed more like personal choice.

It seems that the main benefit is lubrication of your injectors. The lubricity of the diesel varies and is not always what the manufacture specifies. Also the Cetane rating varies. (Cetane for diesel is like octane for gas.) Below are part 1 and part 2 of a great writeup about additives. I found this on an older Tugnuts discussion.
