fuel consumption

Selling our 490 30,000 pound Meridian to downsize to an easier to handle boat.
Focused now on a trailerable, either a cutwater 30 sedan with a 435 Volvo, a Ranger 29 with a D4 Volvo or the Ranger 31 with a D4 Volvo, stock engines as I understand.
Due to the distance that we have to travel with limited fuel stops, west coast Canada, I was wondering if any subscribers can give me fuel consumption curves for any of the above.
We would prefer to cruise at around 14 - 15 knots and would like to know first hand, loaded boat fuel usage at mainly this speed but would prefer any other information
We had considered twin outboards but it appears that for better mpg, you need to run these boats around 30mph, which is too fast for northwest debris filled waters
Thanks in advance

This info is a bit old but should still be close. I don’t have the Cutwater data.

Edit: Note: I think the R 31 numbers in the above charts are suspect (not consistent with each other for a given rpm) and I would not put much value in them. See comments in post below. The R29 (Classic) numbers are consistent with each other (though may not match actual performance of other boats in actual use).

Our 31 CB does not get close to these figures. Note test was with current. We can do 17 knots @ 3500 and about 1.2 mpg without current.

I found these charts on this site a few years ago and added them to my album. I can’t remember who posted them though they clearly came from RT originally. I was mostly interested in the R27 numbers (which are also in my album) which are reasonably accurate relative to our performance (though still better which I attribute to no bottom paint and less loading etc. on the RT test boat.

Now that I look at the R31 numbers they are not adding up for either the CB or the sedan. The numbers at each rpm level should be directly related with simple math but that is not the case. (Nmpg x gph “should equal” Nmph) Even if there was current or wind the numbers should still correlate. At least one of the columns is wrong but I can’t tell which one. Possibly the data was captured for each column at different times without noting the associated values had changed. Or one column (mph?) is in statute miles vs nautical miles who knows? In retrospect, I think they are suspect and wouldn’t put much faith in them. :?

Thanks for the information.
How have your D4's been standing up?

There is only one D4 in the R31. It has been flawless for 4 years. I have the extended warranty, so I have all service done by a Volvo diesel certified mechanic annually to ensure that I maintain the warranty without any questions. No problems at all with about 400 engine hours.

Could you please post the fuel consumption chart for the R-27? I've got a R-27 (but with the Volvo engine) and would be interested in seeing the data.

Thanks!

On my R27 with the D3, cruising at about 14-15 mph (statue) I get about 2.1 or 2.2 mpg

Same here. I have never achieved the RT numbers in the chart. I expect that is because we are more fully loaded and have bottom paint. Within about 10 to 15% though.

Dale777 figures much more like my experience.

We have the D4-260 in a R29S and so you have a comparative to travel at more trawler like speeds in favorable conditions we averaged close to 5NM /gallon crossing over from Key Largo to North Bimini traveling at approx 8/9 knots though only needing +/- 1500 RPMs. And we are running very heavy for our extended stay in the Bahamas. Another huge benefit to these Tugs is you can choose to slow down to vastly improve your range.

I will check again this year with new bottom paint but my cutwater 28 runs about about 1.8 NMPG at 17-19 knots at 3030 to 3100 RPM
