Hi, I have an R 23 diesel. The fuel fill is only 1.5 inches in diameter. And there is no vent externally, so it is very difficult to fill the tank. The diesel overflows very quickly and easily. Has anyone installed a 1.75 inch fuel fill?

I suspect that a funnel is in your future. Ranger has not put a decent fuel fill port on it's boats that I have seen.
There are all kinds of aftermarket solutions - whistle stop, auto shut off, etc.
There will be a number of previous threads on this in the tugnuts archive.
I settled on a simple funnel and a big wad of cotton rags.

Interesting that diesel owners have this problem. I can fill my R-23 gas tank at full pump speed with only a small bit of spit back when the tank is full (a few drops).

It's not so surprising. Though diesel has many advantages as a fuel it does foam much more easily and this causes more frequent blow backs. There are a number of threads and good solutions on the topic.

You might look specifically for threads on the forum discussing the Cleanway filter. Seems like most folks have found it to be a good and helpful product. I used one and liked it for fueling our first Tanger Tug (a R27). Haven’t needed it for the R31.

Ditto for my R27 - no issues.

There should be a vent. If you don’t have one, install one, it should be there. There should be no need for a larger fill line. While there have been multiple comments about diesels with fill problems I suspect all are related to either a low spot in the fill line, a plugged or low spot (or both) in the vent line, or just not slowing down when near full. If you cannot fill with a 1.5inch line without it backing up there is something wrong.

I fill up our 2014 R27 at full speed until I hear the first gurgle out the vent and stop immediately. I use the Garmin flow meter data (look at the tank level in advance) to anticipate when to slow down. I start to listen very carefully when near 10% full as the calibration of the Garmin can be off by up to 10%. (In my case it is always around 8% low. Meaning the gurgle comes 8% early. Nice, I got better mileage than I expected!) Using this method I never have had an overflow (though I have overflowed , by not paying attention, my bad!). I do have to be quiet and listen and stop immediately but can go full speed until then. With diesel fuel the normal auto stop on the pump trigger does not work due to low fumes and foaming.

I hope this helps.

I have read of this overflow issue for several years. My 2012 R27 doesn’t exhibit this problem. I fill my boat using the exact same technique mentioned above and I don’t have diesel messes to clean up. I do, however, prepare for them when filling the tank.

It seems that this issue is most prevalent in later model boats. I have a hunch something may have changed— how the fuel fill line is routed, the angle at which the fuel enters the tank or an inadequate venting system.
