Engine starts and dies. Will only keep running by pumping the bleeder. Is this a common weak point for the D6?

Hi David,

There is no "common weak point" on the D6. There is a number of things that could be happening here and we would need a little more info to be able to help. Some things to check would be to ensure that there are no leaks in the fuel system where the lines could draw air, and to make sure there are no blockages in the fuel lines. Check your fuel filter and drain a small amount to check for sediment or other visible debris. Also, check to make sure that you have sufficient fuel available. I know, it's an obvious question that I'm sure you already checked, but it still bears asking 😀

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks!

Ralf

definitely check the two o rings on the fuel filter. id probably just replace them to be sure. you need one on the t handle and one on the lip of the cap.

also make sure the fuel is not closed off at the tank. easily done if doing maintenance and forgetting to turn it back on.

Fuel filter was replaced...engine only runs when the filter bulb is being pressed. There is a high fuel pressure alarm. Mechanic is stumped and is contacting Volvo.

Our primary fuel filter was replaced by Volvo as that primer bulb failed by letting in air. Have your guy check with Volvo directly. The first volvo techs were stumped and then they called the volvo factory where they were told to just swap it out.

Filter/ bleeder has been replaced. Still only runs while bleeder is pumped. Mechanic is stumped!

Did this get solved? I have the same problem with my new C-28 D4 270. Have tightened fuel lines and replaced fuel filter.
Only solution so far is switching to neutral and increasing rpms directly after start up. This seems to get me past the point where it usually dies.

TIA

We have had similar problems with our d4 320. We have found air is getting in the fuel system. Try cracking the bleeder and pushing the primer and get the air out. I use a paper cup to collect the fuel. This lasts till the next restart after sitting day or more. Primer bulb base unit has been changed and problem was gone for 40 engine hours now we are back to bleeding. Each outing. I’m wondering if the new primer filter assembly is bad. Waiting for Volvo to get back to me.

Finally resolved after lots of back and forth between local tech and Volvo. The high pressure fuel pump failed and the $4000 part was replaced under warranty. Was told the pump was bulletproof and failure was rare!

Update on our 2021 R31 with the Volvo D4 320. It was stalling on startup with air in the system.
Volvo authorized the replacement of our high pressure pump at the beginning of January. The pump was changed out Jan 5th. We now have over 35 hours on the new pump and all is working properly. I was hesitant to post a follow up until now as we have now had about 10 cold starts. So I’m feeling confident the problem is corrected. Current hours are 218 in 9 months.
