First fuel filter change on my R27. The fuel filter was tight beyond belief. Bent 3 strap wrenches and hurt my back trying to loosen it. Finally took it to a mechanic and he was finally able to remove it in a bent up mangled mess. From previous blogs this seems to be a common problem. Volvo should be aware and ratchet down the torque when putting these things on!

Yep. I was told by RT that they started removing and resetting the filter on once they became aware of this. Probably a miscalibrated factory robot at the Volvo factory!

It happened to us too, it cost $180 to have the Volvo mechanic remove it by removing the base and putting it in a vise. They told me that that part of the warranty ran out a few weeks earlier at 2 years. Now I do it myself and make sure I don't over tighten it...hasn't happened in 4 changes since.

The RT Factory must have missed my engine. The filter was so tight I had to remove the filter housing from the engine and put it in a vise. It was still hard to break loose on the bench. It took 2 1/2 turns with the strap wrench before it finally broke loose. I talked to a certified Volvo technician about it,"Robot built engine" "Its a problem but so far Volvo isn't doing anything about it". Even the drain/sensor on mine was tight, I was afraid I was going to break it when removing it. I feel fortunate that I removed it on the hard doing maintenance and not 20 miles out on the Lake with an alarm. I'm afraid Sea Tow would have been called !

I had this issue on my 2010 R-25 (Classic) for both fuel filters. Thus, the secondary filter which would have been installed by RT was also over tightened.
