Our new-to-us 2016 R27 is in charter. As a perk for charter boat owners, the charter company will take care of fueling when we bring her back. We took it out for our maiden voyage last week and noticed that the fuel quantity, as read off the Garmin and the Volvo display, stayed at 100% the whole time. I just heard from the charter co that it only took 2.5 gallons of diesel. We motored for at least 10 hours over the weekend. While I'm thrilled with a fuel burn of a quarter gallon per hour, it's obvious something is askew here.

Any thoughts on what would cause the fuel gauge to continuously report full and also prevent full refueling?

Thanks

I think you have 2 issues.
The gauge..... If the gauge is based on the fuel sender in the tank, a couple hours may still have the sender at the "full" mark..... my Volvo gauge is like that on my 29. The sender is aft in the tank and the boat sits just enough tail low to keep the sender on full until I am nearly half full. The Garmin may be a setting. I have mine set to gallons....so it shows gallons remaining..... percentages may be read off the fuel sender too.

The 2.5 gallon fill up - my guess is that the guy filling was trying to fill too fast. I know mine requires a very slow fill and I have heard others with diesel 27's with the same issue. If he wasn't familiar with the boat, he probably just thought it was full. I would try to fill it again.

Those are my guesses - Worth every bit what you paid. 🙂

yeah I wonder if the garmin total fuel tank size is set incorrectly, worth poking around in the settings of the fuel in Garmin.
- its easy to change the fuel tank size setting when filling up rather than adding fuel. - might have happened whilst in charter...

(the garmin fuel display will likely be more accurate than the sender as it measures fuel flow into the engine from the NMEA network)

Fuel fill mystery solved! Turns out someone else in the charter company filled the tank with 28 gallons prior to another person attempting the fill.

Thanks for the info on gauge calibration. Sounds spot on, we'll poke around with that.
