Hi to all. We are relatively new boaters. Have had our R21 since June of 2015. We are noticing that the fuel seems to be leaking all over the back of the boat out of the vent. I assume this shouldn't be happening? Any ideas/suggestions? Could we be overfilling the fuel tank? We try to only fill 3/4 full but the leaking (burping) continues.

Also - is there a published maintenance schedule for this model? I haven't been able to find one and would like to be sure we keep everything in tip top condition.

Thank you for any information you can provide.

If your vent is on the starboard side, there is a hose that runs to the top of the tank on the port side. Make sure the hose has a uniform slope with no sags to collect fuel. This sometimes requires shortening the hose and/or supporting it in several places.

Hi there: the fuel issue again. My vessel is a 2009 model R21-EC and this has been a recurring problem for me. The secret is not to fill the tank unless going on a long cruise; leave it around half, instead of topping it up to the full 68 litres. Once the swell and waves pick up you will always get this problem. If you have the Moeller brand fuel tank, it is worth checking to see if they have finally installed baffles to minimise the effect of transverse surge, resultant from rolling in rough seas. Not sure if there have been modifications done over the years since 2009, but I suspect not. It is all about the tank design - installed lengthwise across the stern, without anything to prevent surge effect. To be fair to Ranger Tugs, there is no other option for location of the fuel tank. I too have the hose laid across the top of the tank to a return inlet on the port side. I have also tried supporting the hose with HDPE blocks, to no avail. My fuel filler point is on the stbd side - the fuel cap is also vented internally through the underside of the cap. Basically, it is the physics of the design: without internal tank baffles built into the tank construction, you will always get transverse surge, resulting in fuel being forced up the filler pipe and out through the internal cap vent. There is nothing wrong with the quality of the Moeller tank - it is just the absence of internal baffles: I cannot believe their engineering and design people have not stumbled onto this issue. I have written to Moeller Marine Products in the US, recommending they consider a design change for future models, but to date have received no response. Not sure if anyone is home! Anyone who has been to sea for a living can see the problem and the solution. Regards to all.

Hopefully you can find previous threads on this if you do a search. Quite a few of us have resolved the issue by ‘ramping’ the fuel line after pulling it tight.

I have a 2016 R21E and my local dealer had installed an Atwood (part# 1675-6) File Surge Protector between the nipple on the top of the fuel tank leading to the vent line hose. The bottom port of the Surge Protector is threaded onto the tank nipple with a small stainless hose clamp for extra support. Then a 90deg brass connector threaded into the top of the Protector with another small hose clamp. Then threaded into a hose barb leading into the vent line hose also with clamps. I have had not problem so far with fuel leaks. I have a pic but not certain how best to post so shoot me an e-mail if you have interest.

Hi Bob: my email: stevan47@live.com.au. Look forward to hearing from you. PM sent to you just now. Regards

Thank you so much to each of you for taking the time to reply. Will be working on this over the weekend and hope to have some happy results to post soon.

Thank you again to all!! 😀

I had the same problem, tried rearranging the hose and still leaked a little around the vent. A simple solution I came up with was to cut the vent hose and put in a shut off valve which I open along with the fuel shut off whenever I use the boat. It works great, no more leaking fuel.

wow, simple but brilliant idea... if mine was still burping fuel this would be a great fix.
