I don’t think my fuel tank fill level is properly calibrated in my Volvo EVC. I went to the fuel sale at Morrison’s yesterday, and my Volvo digital gauge said I had 93 gallons onboard, which should mean I could take on 87 (180 gallon tank). I put in 110 gallons before the gauge showed 180. That’s at least a 10% delta! The tank still may not be completely full but I don’t know for sure since I didn’t want to push it and have a spill. I know the EVC can be recalibrated using a multipoint method, but that sounds like I’d have to drain my tank completely and add back 10 gallons at a time. Any easier way?

I don't have a direct answer to your question but this might help alleviate your concerns on continuing to add fuel to your tank. On our way back from Des Moines we stopped in La Conner to get fuel and the attendant brought out this device that attaches to the hull with two suction cups and has a rubber grommet that fits over the fuel vent. It worked pretty well so I bought one. It has a retaining cord to wrap around a nearby cleat just in case it comes off. For it to work well you have to take off or loosen the cap so there is no pressure inside the container.

The vent tender! Yes I have one. 🙂

This method of EVC calibration was shown to me by a factory trained Volvo technician. It does require about an hour of time but leaves you with an accurate fuel reading. The boat must be running/ resting level for it to be accurate, same as the fuel sender in your vehicle. After I calibrated my EVC using the method explained in the thread below. The fuel reading was as spot on.

This may or may not be an easier way but it is an accurate way to calibrate the sending unit to the EVC. It is a best practice procedure to have this calibration done when a boat is delivered. The full tank calibration is not accurate but the EVC properly calibrated is.

The comparison of the Garmin fuel calibration reading and the EVC reading from the tank sending unit. .8 gallon difference. I believe the EVC was the accurate reading.

Thanks Brian. Very useful info as always! I’ll see how ambitious I can get this winter to undertake this. 🙂
