I installed a fuel vent whistle today. I cut about 1.5" out of the fuel vent line some 18" below the vent's outlet in the transom. The whistle fitted nicely and snugly at a slight angle and was attached at each end with SS hose clamps.

As a test I filled the fuel tank to satisfy myself the whistle did indeed work as advertised. I pump cautiously at first and the whistle sounded. I then proceeded to pump at full pump nozzle flow and the whistle sound did get louder with the odd gurgle. No fuel spilled out the vent. I knew the tank would require some 35 gallons so as this amount was close to being reached I slowed the fuel input flow down some and stopped when the whistle sound reduce to almost zero. At this point I stopped pumping.

The only question in my mind using this whistle is that when the whistle stops I assume fuel has entered the whistle and that the fuel level must be close to being some 18" below the vent outlet. To me this is a bit close to having too much fuel. The only other position would be to place the whistle much closer to the fuel tank, but from what I can see this is would be nigh impossible to install in such a location… plus the whistle would be oriented horizontally which is contrary to the installation instructions that states it should be at least at a 45º angle.

For those who have installed a fuel vent whistle where did you locate it and do you pump until the whistle sound stops ?

Overall, I'm quite satisfied having installed the fuel vent whistle and allows me to pump at full speed knowing I will get a heads-up when to slow the fuel flow down to a crawl and eventually stop filling.

FYI… I bought the fuel vent whistle from Hamilton Marine online… http://store.hamiltonmarine.com - FUEL WHISTLE FITS ALL BOATS 5/8" FUEL LINES 174019 $19.99. See item at http://store.hamiltonmarine.com/bro...all-boats-5-8-fuel-lines-174019-/4,33109.html

HI Baz,
Great news we contacted Hamilton's ( but the never replied to our e-mail) 🙁 but we found an Australian supplier who replied to our e-mail straight away 😀 our fuel whistle should be here in a week or so 😀 We think it's one of the best after market items around 😀 .
Cheers

When we had our 20' Seaswirl, I/O, I installed the vent whistle.
I installed is about 12" from the vent opening.
Sure got a lot of stares and funny looks when the tank was filling!
Sure fire way to prevent spilling fuel overboard.

When I hear any kind of whistle, be it a a synthetic one or a human made one, it makes me happy. 😀 Now the sound of the pump out is a different kettle of fish altogether. 😉

I whistle during pump outs - because I am not the one doing them..
Sure makes me happy.
