Fuel / Water Separator Question

When replacing the fuel water separator on the outboards is it OK to pour the remaining fuel in the old separator into the new one before installing? If not what to do with the old fuel. Perhaps put it back in the main fuel tank? Thanks my

I pour the old gas into a clear jar. Let it sit a bit, and if theres no water layer, I pour into the new filter. If theres water, then I dispose of it. It's best to fill the new unit with gas, or it takes forever to reprime
