2 Questions

1) On the 2016 R27's built in 2015, was there a galvanic isolator factory installed to prevent electrolysis from other boats when hooked up to shore power located between the shore power plug and the main AC panel?

2) An ABYC Certified Marine Electrician indicated to me that on Ranger-Tugs there is a copper strap with brushes on the drive shaft that he sees could be problematic in the bonding system. Have you heard of this and if so, do you recommend a solution fix?

In my opinion it is a bit overkill. A majority of us tuggers don't have them and I have not heard of any issues because they were not installed

I installed a GI on my R-25 (Classic) and found it did not reduce the underwater anode corrosion rate to offset the cost of the GI and its installation. RT do not install GIs but could be wrong about that....

The copper strap with brushes sounds like a Prop Shaft brush. If installed properly there should be no issues IMO. I installed one and bonded it to the boat's bonding system.

Hello Chris,

The factory does not install galvanic iosolators. I assume the technician is talking about a shaft brush which we also do not install. I would recommend reaching out to Brad at Port Boat House (assuming this is where you purchased the boat from) and talk to him about potential solutions to fit your situation in the marina you keep it.

I'm installing a galvanic isolator this weekend on my R-29 CB based on the recommendation from our hull cleaner. He takes care of other Fluid Motion boats and says it does help in our marina, particularly with the prop nut anode. It's a ProMariner 22074 22075 ProSafe. I bought it on Amazon for $285. Note that the one I purchased is for 60 amp since we have two shore hook ups. The 30 amp version is less expensive. It may take awhile to pay off but I like the boat having some protection.

installed a Quicksilver dul 30 on out RT31 and is helps. Before all zinc gone in 5 weeks, after all except trim good as new after 13 mo.

Besides the Galvanic Isolater I also use a sacrificial zinc clipped to the negative side of one of the batteries while at marinas. I replace my zincs about once per year. I am in the water about 7 months per year.
