Interesting thing happened on my Garmin 5212 today leaving Stuart Island. I powered the unit on by pushing down the power button on the unit for a few seconds. Instead of the usual slow startup I got a red “SYSTEM MISSING” warning in the screen under the Garmin logo. And nothing more.
After two shutdown and restarts with the same SYSTEM MISSING error I tried leaving the unit off for 10 minutes. Then started it, got the SYSTEM MISSING warning and waited. And waited. After a couple of minutes the warning message changed to HOLDING. After another few minutes the message changed to SYSTEM LOADING. Finally the normal main startup screen came up.
I think I triggered this by pushing down the power button for too long. I hadn’t done an update for over a year.
Read through the 5212 manual with no mention of this situation.
Has anyone else seen these warnings on their Chartplotter?
