When I turned on my Garmin 5212 today and went to Combinations and then NAV Chart my depth reading was gone. It does show up under Charts, Sonar, Where To and Radar but not under Combinations/Nav Chart. I tried the owners manual and did everything they suggested with no success. Has anyone had this happen to them and or what help might someone have for me to get my depth reading back onto the Combination/Nav Chart page? I'm probably not doing something correctly as the depth shows up everywhere else. Thanks for any help.

Happy Labor Day weekend. In route to Roche Harbor/Garrison Bay if anyone is around stop by.

Have a good time at Roche... it's their most popular weekend with tons of boats and people. We were there last weekend to beat out the crowds etc.

From your post it sounds like you used to have the Depth displayed when configuring for a Combination display... is this correct ? The Garmin 5212 software UI design is not intuitive by a long shot IMO.

I'm down on our boat today so will check a few things out in this regard.

BTW... The Roche Harbor free Wi-Fi signal is best if you take your laptop to the Hotel Haro's lobby... you may have to ask for the authentication number to gain access to their Wi-Fi, and the reception desk can provide that for you.

We have an iPad with Wi-Fi + AT&T and quite honestly, we subscribe to AT&T's monthly data plan for $14.95/month and find this far more reliable at Marinas and while on the water cruising.

Jim: Turn on the "Data Bar" option.

Combinations->Select your Combination display->Menu->Change Combination->Data Bar

Barry:

I tried this before with the manual instructions and just know with no positive results. I'll look you up at the Rendezvous or maybe the Garmin folks will be in attendance.

Thanks,

Jim F

Jim,
I found that when using some of the combinations you loose info that you get on the single screen. I always thought this was due to the fact that you are using a smaller screen and can only fit so much information on it. Keep us informed when you get an answer.

Jim: See this photo which might help you. This Combo has 3 displays... Chart, Sonar and Radar and has the Data Bar on the right.

There's a way to indicate what you want to see displayed in the Data Bar under "Menu" and I'll have to dig out my notes on how this is done.

Thanks Barry. Interesting enough I get the depth on the display you showed, on the sonar, radar and any number of combinations of screens but somehow I lost it on the screen where Navigation is just displayed. I had it yesterday and today it's gone. Not to worry as I have it other areas but I like to use this particular screen. See you in a few days in Anacortes.

To set Depth in bottom left corner

Chart->Navigation Chart->Menu->Data Bars->Cruising

Now with Cruising enabled (On) select "Data Bar Setup" and then select "Bottom Left" and then select "Next Page" and then select "Water" and then select "Depth".

Very long winded I agree... and NOT intuitive at all. 😉

Jim & Mike: It is easy (unfortunate maybe) to lose the Depth value display if you select Sailing, Fishing chart configuration. However, I believe if you follow my previous post's directions you can always reinstate it for the Cruising chart.

I agree, it's very frustrating when reconfiguring the Chart display(s) only to find you've lost some data you always rely on for some other Chart display, and then spending just too much time trying to figure out how to get the data back -- especially if you're on the water.

The Garmin manual looks fancy/impressive but does not provide clear instructions on how to reconfigure Charts IMO. It really requires several flow chart examples showing how to navigate all the Chart display options.

I'm in the process of creating my own Chart configuration flow charts for future use as it's just to 'crazy' trying to remember how something was done many moons ago... 😉

When I was trying to figure out Jim's problem I also lost my Depth readout on my main single Cruising chart display, and it took me several attempts to map out the precise screen navigational steps to have it reinstated.

Barry you've gone up and above the call of duty in trying to help me with my depth reading situation. With that said I had to laugh (hopefully with you) when I read that you lost your depth reading as well....even thou temporarily.

The speed with which electronics go off into the weeds is proportional to the desire/need to use them.
Yesterday, taking pictures of two tall ships flying full canvas off of Put-In-Bay my Nikon was working perfectly as we closed from a distance. Coordinated with the captains by radio to make a close in slow pass, pulled the throttles to idle at the right moment, raised the camera - and it refuses to focus!
Now this is a camera I have used for years and I am competent with the menus and controls.
I rapidly went through the menus looking for what had changed, and as we drifted out of close range (and the gorgeous light through the sails went away, the camera once again decided to function.
By now, the slavering herd of lookers in other boats lost self control and mobbed the tall ships removing any chance of a clean shot. (sigh)

Murphy rules.

Jim: Hopefully my instructions helped you... and I learned a few more things about my 5212's configuration options that I never knew about... so it was a win-win situation. See you next week...

I did not realize Jim was talking about his original navigation charts screen that he lost it. I thought he meant that when he went into combination mode and the screen was smaller he lost the reading.
I had asked Garmin at our NE Rendezvous as to why their manual was a bit cryptic. His answer was that they felt that the unit was intuitive. He explained that on each screen you will see a menu button and that the menu that pops up is related to the screen that you are looking at.
On another note I asked why they don't have a recently found screen. I find it very annoying when for some reason you want to look at info on a previous day's destination or one that you are going to and you have to go through all of the keystrokes to find it. He was taking notes on our "improvement" questions, so perhaps some day. He recommended that if you have a problem or recommendation calling their help line is the way to go. I have found them to be pretty proactive most of the times.

denny-o: you need to have a backup camera at the ready... Sorry to hear technology let you down... it must have been very annoying for you.

Denny, my only response to the comment "Murphy rules" is amen. Without going into detail the camera I was using Friday was my iPhone 4s. It can't focus now because it's in the bottom of the lake. Murphy was very active last week!

I was able to get the depth reading back onto my Combination/Nav Chart today with the help of a Garmin rep at the Rendezvous in Anacortes. Interestingly enough it was there to be added back onto the screen all along, I just did not recognize where to get it back from. So we found it by touching the side bar under "menu", touching one of stat readings....or in my case the blank spot where I used to have the depth reading. Once there I scrolled down to the next page. When I came to "water" I clicked on this and guess what showed up again? "depth" I clicked on this and I had depth back onto my combination/nav chart screen. I guess when I saw water before I never clicked onto it because I thought this was for temperature....not true as it has to do with draft, water speed, water temperature and yes depth. It makes sense now but it sure was not as intuitive at the time.

So now the question is how did I lose the depth reading in the first place? My guess is operator error!

Thanks for all your suggestions,

Jim F

Yeah, and he has butter fingers.

edit: referring to Murphy, not Jim.

We're newbies to Ranger tugs having just bought a 2010 R 25. We are having fun but our Garmin 5212 depth finder
keeps flashing the same depth. It read accurately in our slip but then started flashing. We have tried resetting it but it keeps happening. The low water and high water warnings went off appropriately but no true depth reading. Any suggestions on fixing it would be appreciated!

We have a MY2010 R-25 and yes, we also have the Depth readout display flashing at times. However, it's only when the depth is around 500 feet or more. Quite honestly, if my chart shows depth of 100s of feet for my current location I don't pay much attention to the flashing readout. In the PNW Puget Sound area there are many areas where depth is 500, 600, 700 feet or more.

My depth readout is accurate apart from the flashing. Is what I've posted similar to what you're seeing on your display ?

I believe the flashing is caused by the depth transducer losing contact with the sea bed. After a while the flashing stops when the sea bed location is regained.

In addition to Barry's comments you need to check your transducer. If yours is a thru hull mounted transducer it may need to be cleaned from the hull side. If yours is adhered to your interior hull and reads thru the fiberglass it could be one that is filled with mineral oil, if so check the reservoir to make sure it is full of oil and or that it is properly sealed to the interior hull. Sometimes these units break loose a bit and if so they do not read properly, if at all.
