Hi Gang,

I'm moving up from my R-21EC to an R-27 Classic which has the older Garmin 5212 chartplotter.

I've ordered a Garmin 8612 and am wondering how difficult it is to swap them out. After talking with Garmin, I understand I will remove the existing GSD22 box as it will not be needed and I will need a 6 pin to 4 pin adapter for the Airmar P79 transducer.

When looking at the back of the helm instrument cluster I see a hinge at the bottom of wood plate the 5212 is mounted to. It looks like it is designed to fold forward but also looks like there are way more brackets holding it in place than the four posts which appear to be the chartplotter mounting bolts. Am I missing something here?

Also, while I don't plan to replace it right away, can someone please tell me the location of the tranducer on an R-27 Classic?

Oh, and one more thing: Where in the boat does the backbone for the N2K run?

Thanks for the help.

On my 2012 R27, it’s behind the refrigerator.

Let us know how the upgrade works out.

The transducer Is at the stern way below. Access is from below the seat cushion. If you have the propane tank under the seat you need to remove the tank and the sealed box it is in and then remove the shelf that it all sits on. Then find a leprechaun or someone with long arms to fit down there and reach it. It is about 12 inches starboard of the center of the boat and perhaps 12 inches forward.

Thanks Caspers and Knot,

I'll report back on my imminent successes or failures.

Cheers,
Mark
