I am looking for a shortcut to mark a position when bottom fishing. The Garmin 5215 being "touch screen" I want a faster way to mark a spot. I have the navchart and bottom machine on split screen. Is the only way I can mark the spot as follows? Touch Home. Touch Mark or Man Over Board. When I do this I have moved over the spot a bit and by the time I sort it out and get back to the nav screen/bottom machine view I am running in circles a bit trying to re aquire the spot. My other option (depths of 100 to 150 ft) in our area is a clorox bottle painted day glo orange with line wrapped around it and an eight pount weight. The whole thing is thrown overboard, unwinds and anchors itself near the spot. Then I re-aquire the spot relative to the floating bottle and then mark it. It works ok when you are running from one area to another at 15 kts and run over something that looks good. Did I mention that I am "technologically challenged"? Help!

According to page 25 of the GPSMap manual, the steps you described is the way to do it. You have to remember though that GPS is not accurate. In the very best of conditions, GPS can be from 1 to 10 meters off. Here is a link that tells about it http://www.maps-gps-info.com/gps-accuracy.html

Rick,

Thanks! It is good to know that I had read the manual correctly. Since my post, a friend introduced me to an automated version of my "jug overboard" from West Marine. With our climate I hunt spots with the pilot house door open and jug at hand. I am running about 15 kts and if the bottom machine picks something up interesting, over it goes! My Raymarine unit had a button on the side of the display that you could push and not lose the chart or bottom view. I'll just have to get used to the Garmin. It is a great display, especially with the radar overlay.
