Garmin 5215 Transducer

On return to our mooring last week we encountered a transducer failure. After checking the network cables and a little "tugging" (O.K., lousy pun but I did it anyway) it came back online. Has anyone tried dielectric grease on the cable connections? Just wondering 'cause I expect the glitch to return and would like to do what ever I can to prevent it.

I have not tried dielectric grease here, maybe others will chime in. I do have a question and suggestion thou....is your transducer a thru hull or one that is glued/adhered to the inside hull? If it is adhered to the hull and you have not checked the unit you might do this. The unit may have come loose which could cause the depth sounder to act up or if it is an oil bath unit is it filled to the proper level? A low level or contaminated oil will cause a false or no reading. I've seen these situations occur on other boats which has caused depth reading problems....it's worth a check unless of course you've already done so.

When you say transducer failure, exactly what happened? Did you get a flashing of the depth or was it just absent of numbers. These are indicative of two different problems.

It indicated no info. It did not act like it had lost "lock" which happens frequently when I cross the sand bar in our bayou entrance. Usually have less than 2 ft. below the keel. I have gotten used to manually adjusting the gain in the bay when fishing. I will check the transducer well just in case something went awry there. Didn't think of that but did have that problem on my old boat.

Sometimes a master reset works. Unplug the wires to the transducer unit which should be located behind your 5212. Wait a minute and plug them in again. As far as the "oil" in the transducer assembly cavity. I believe it is antifreeze not oil. They used to use oil.
