Garmin 7610 and Standard Horizon GX1600 Not Talking

My plotter and VHF radio don't talk to one another. I know the VHF radio is capable of receiving GPS position form the Garmin but I've been unable to troubleshoot. Have changed a few settings of the 0183 bus, but no luck. Any ideas?

Wouldn't you be using the NMEA 2000 backbone to tie them together? Usually it is a plug and play scenario.
 
What is the baud rate set to? I believe I read that the GX1600 is set at 4800 so the 7610 needs to be set to that as well. The manual that I read on the GX1600 only mentioned NMEA 0183 connections. The 7610 can output NMEA 2000 and 0183. I would expect the GX1600 would be wired properly from the factory, assuming it is the factory radio.
 
My R-23 which I picked up in July 2017 has the Horizon 1600 VHF radio and the Garmin 7610 chart plotter. I was told the factory does not wire them together. Kenny Marrs and Ivan Guzman from the Ranger Tug factory were kind enough to give me instructions and a diagram showing which color coded wires need to be spliced together. I was able to do the wire splicing myself. It was tough finding the end of the wires coming out of both units. A lot of feeling around blindly to find the pig tail ends because it is hard to actually see anything. I had to add about 2 feet of wire in order to connect both units together. I did everything from inside the head compartment. You will need to remove the wood paneling to get to the pig tails with the color coded wiring. The VHF radio will display latitude, longitude and time which it receives from the chart plotter, if you are successful with getting them wired together.

Thanks Bill! Sounds like a fun Winter project is in order. And you're right, it's a bit tight and dark back there.
 
Disappointing to hear factory doesn't wire them together. I understand the NMEA 0183 wires are tiny and a hassle to deal with.

Hmmm, the R27OB looks to use the same radio, I wonder if it is wired to the chartplotter from the factory or not.
 
So I am getting conflicting information on this connection and how to make it from folks. I just had a correspondence with the factory and was told that it is not necessary to remove the panel in the head, then when I go through this thread it is stated that it is necessary.

If folks have done this, would you chime in here please. Also, when splicing, did you butt splice with crimp on connectors, did you solder them together and then heatshrink them. I would be interested to know.

I am seeing the following as "directions":

1. From the Garmin 7600 XSV series To the Standar Horizon VHF GX 1600

Garmin: Standard Horizon Radio GX 1600:
Blue……………………………….……………………………………….…Blue
Ground from hardness……….…………………………………….Green
Brown……….………...……………………………………………….….Grey

I am guessing that it was necessary to remove the radio, or that maybe in order not to, the head panel needed to be removed? The back of the Garmin is easily accessed, I thought, through the hinged access panel in the head.

I am hoping to complete this this weekend when I get back up to my boat, so any help that comes my way would be greatly appreciated.
