Garmin AIS Upgrade

Remember to shut off the AIS on your Garmin VHS or you'll see your own boat on the screen all the time....🙂

Not sure I follow you here. Can you explain? If I remove the AIS 300 (to replace it with the AIS 800), why would this happen?

My factory AIS Receive was accomplished via my Garmin VHF Radio..... There was menu selection to toggle the AIS function "off" on the VHF Radio.

If I was to leave that toggles "on" the AIS Receive in the VHF would show my own boat on the screen...In essence, my VHF AIS was picking up my AIS800 Transmit....

I did not have an AIS 300.

I hope that helps!

Consider the Vesper Cortex M1. I was on back order for the 800 for months. Finally talked to Garmin. They indicated that the Cortex, at a higher price, is an upgrade to the 800. I installed it and had them program it remotely. Works very well.

One of my ToDo projects is to swap it for the em-trak b954 I bought last summer....

gregc, why are you swapping out the Em-Trak B954?

I have AIS 300 and just bought an AIS 800 used. I'm reading online that to program it I need to be a Garmin certified installer/service center. Is there no way for me to do the programming myself? If anyone knows how I can program it without paying someone certified to do it, let me know!

I recently installed the 800 myself. Unfortunately, Garmin took away the ability for the end user to program the MMSI number themselves. I took it to an authorized dealer and they programmed it. It took about 15 minutes and charged $30.00.

Thanks! Glad to know the pricing is very fair. I'll call around locally and see what I can find.
