Garmin aquired ActiveCaptain

Only if you don't have Garmin!

Thanks for posting this.... Seems a natural for Garmin to do. Good show for ActiveCaptain. 🙂

Well, congratulations to Karen and Jeff Siegel. They have probably made a nice chunk of change off of this sale. I guess I'll withhold judgement until the Siegel's say something, but I admit to being very skeptical that this very good idea is now owned by big nav tech.

My favorite road atlas software was DeLorme, I bought it for years. But Garmin bought them out and canned the products they didn't want. Look for Garmin to strip off the most salable features and junk the rest.

I guess thats how you measure success in software- get good enough to get bought out.

Garmin has been great for service and help. My biggest issue with them was that I had originally purchased the weather subscription for a one time fee of $2.99. Yes a great deal. Then they did an update down the road and I no longer had the weather. When I called they said that my plan was no longer offered. I said I could understand that policy for new customers, but if I bought the plan under previous parameters shouldn't I as others be grandfathered? I got a slight pause and then, no. Shame on them. I see a subscription fee for Active Captain in the future. Or perhaps preferred marinas and pop up advertising will subsidize the costs and the service will still be free to users. I guess we shall find out soon enough.

Unless Garmin only paid $1 for it, there will be a charge to the user. I believe Garmin would like to recoup their investment and make a profit, isn't that what for profit companies do?

And we provide the most valuable data to them for free! If/when a subscription is instituted, I hope there are some value-added features to go with it.

Garmin will now have access to the ActiveCaptain's user Account data base. 😱
What is future for the ActiveCaptain News Letter  :?:
Will Defender discounts continue to be offered :? :?:
What happens to the eBoatCards :?:

Good questions Baz.

I see a Garmin copyright notice on the eBoatCards website now. I guess that answers that question!
Defender does not carry Garmin at all, it will be interesting to see what happens to the weekly deal. I have taken advantage of this several times.

I like to believe that Jeff and Karen would make sure Garmin continues to allow Active Captain database access by other vendors. The press release indicates that they are now employees of Garmin.

Many other vendors still can control/interact with Fusion marine stereo systems well after they were acquired by Garmin. I see Simrad, Furuno, Raymarine, and others listed as compatible. I hope this is a good example for how they will handle Active Captain.

A post by Jeff to Facebook:

Thank you for the intense discussion, congratulations, and speculation throughout the boating community about Garmin's acquisition of ActiveCaptain. Please understand that this is a busy time and we can't respond to every question through social media. What I can say is that nothing will change for the foreseeable future except that we are now part of the Garmin team. That means you can expect the same incredible services from ActiveCaptain as you've received in the past, but now with the support of one of the world’s leading marine electronics providers.
In addition, there will be no fees for ActiveCaptain. We will continue to communicate with you through various channels. And yes, there will still be hats awarded for your contributions to the community.
Give this a chance to unfold. We'll discuss more in the next couple of newsletters. Remember that no one has more passion for this product and community than us. This isn't an end. It's an incredible beginning of many more capabilities.

Of course Garmin will now have the final say regardless of Jeff's well stated intentions. :!:

Now think about it for a second...

This is a very large, public company. Do you think "Jeff" wrote that on his own, or do you think it had to be approved before it could be released publicly?

Jeff, congratulations to you and Karen. It's been a pleasure to watch your constant and successful pursuit of product excellence, community and business development (which go hand in hand), and information distribution opportunities. I'm proud to have earned my ActiveCaptain cap. I look forward to what the future holds for you, your platform, and your boater community. I believe you've always had the community's best interests at heart and fully expect this will continue to be the case. I believe the vast majority of our Tugnuts community feels the same.

Way to go!

Bruce

I'd like to thank Jeff and his wife Karen for all their wonderful contributions to our boating experience. The reviewing of marinas and anchorages was invaluable to us as we cruised on the water. It was like a Trip Advisor for boaters. I can't even imagine the time invested or the amount of emails required to answer questions and to get the idea and product where it is today. Anyone who has ever met Jeff always said how friendly and welcoming both Jeff and Karen are. I think the idea of Active Captain was genius but the effort to get Active Captain where it is today seems to me to be a larger feat. I wonder what accomplishments could be attributed to anyone not seeing this whole process of getting Active Captain to where it is today in a positive light. All the Best for Jeff and Karen in what ever their future holds for them.

Jeff said he would continue to give out hats for the foreseeable future,

Ditto on what Scuffy said. I had the pleasure of meeting Jeff and Karen in Castine, ME. Genuine people. Active Captain has been one of the most valuable assets for cruising. Hopefully Garmin will continue the tradition.

With BlueChart Mobil gone and if your chart plotter does not have WiFi capability to use the new Active Captain app on the iPhone, how are you getting and displaying Active Captain data?
