Subject: Garmin Auto pilot's Zig Zag mode ?

I'm getting ready to use the Garmin Auto pilot's Zig-Zag mode while trolling for Salmon. I'm interested in hearing experiences that others have had who have used this Zig-Zag mode. This mode has various settings and without having explored them yet I'm wondering what others have used and for what reasons ?

Yes, absolutely when in the Torpedo alley... I'm told Salmon have an attitude and zig-zagging the lure provides them with a more challenging fun action and an opportunity. :lol:

More specifically, it's Coho (silvers) that like irratic action at 3-5 mph (vary) with short leaders suspended in deep water... later in the season after coho/pinks have gone you'll slow it down 1.5-2.5 mph bouncing the bottom following a selected contour with longer leaders for blackmouth (resident kings)... regarding zig-zag feature of the Garmin autopilot, I have no idea!

Mr. Berry: I know nothing about the auto zig zag feature on your boat. The main reason for the maneuver while fishing is it will speed up the outside lure and slow down the in side lure, due to the blow back of the down rigger weights you will be raising the out side one while dropping the inside one a few feet. This way you will be covering more fishing area with your bait. When fishing you will notice which side gets the most strikes (inside or outside) during the turn and is a good indication to speed up or slow down and to adjust your depth.
Am still awaiting for that post and pictures of that 20+ lb salmon! Bob

As stated one of the key reasons is to cover more water but also importantly to put the lures in undisturbed or clean water that does not have turbulence from the propeller. Improves strike rate.

One could also use that feature when experiencing continuous rolling from side seas. Setting a zig zag helps to alternately put the swells more on the quarters, making things just a little more comfortable.
