I just did an iOS update and my blue charts crashes when I go to do search. Anyone else having this problem?

Hi Mike, I remember this discussion here awhile back. Most that did the upgrade lost their BlueCharts and Garmin hadn't made the charts compatable with the upgrade yet. Do a quick search here and see what other had to say. I haven't done it yet. Good Luck.

This was a new update like a few days ago. I had the fix after the last update and everything was fine. Now there was another update and I am in crashville when I want to do a search.

Hey there Mike,

Garmin has one of the best technical support programs that I know of. I will see if someone can contact you first thing tomorrow. Why dont you send me an email to my andrewcustis@rangertugs.com address with your contact phone and direct email and I will put you in touch?

Thanks Mike!

You're not alone with this. Mine on my iPhone 5 running Version iOS 7.1 (11D167) also crashes doing a search... bummer. 🙁 Have you had any word from Garmin when they might issue a bug fix ?

Yes, They were not aware of this problem and I must have been one of the first to contact them because after discussing the issue with a tech and him trying to figure it out the next day the tech contacted me and said they were starting to get a flood of calls on this and they were going to work on a fix. So hopefully soon we will be able to do a search.

This is why I usually wait before installing an iOS update. There have been too many issues with app compatibility or problems in iOS itself, particularly with a major version update. A point release is usually safer but I still wait. If I do not need/want/care about features in a new release I wait and let others find/fix the bugs.
Early iOS 6 releases were particularly bad, at work we got urgent dire warnings from IT not to upgrade due to email and battery drain issues. Apple did resolve these but it took a few weeks.

I sent an e-mail to product support asking when a fix will be available. This is the response I got!

Dear Michael Rizzo,

I am happy to help. Unfortunately, we in Product Support are not informed of the progress of a software update. Please be assured that if we knew something, we would let you know.

Happy to help??? What part of support are they missing?
Well as you can imagine, I responded. I will report if I here anything back.

Mike this was my response from Garmin after sending in feedback on this issue under 7.1.1 (11D201)... and they missed the point that I was running the iOS 7.1.1 (11D201) version altogether. 😱

Dear Mr. Sharp,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I am happy to help. The issue you have when you initiate a search started happening with iOS 7.1. My guess is that your device was updated to version 7.1 which is causing the “Search” feature in Garmin BlueChart Mobile to crash. Garmin has been notified of this issue and is working on a BlueChart Mobile update to correct it.

Unfortunately, I cannot quote a completion date but it will be released as soon as it has been tested.

One of the best ways I know of influencing the process is to put feedback in iTunes that the app is crashing and be as specific as possible as to how the crash is reproduced (this case is pretty easy). Making serious issues visible to Apple will usually result in more pressure to improve Garmin's releases next time, up to and including removal of bad apps from the store. I always send diagnostic info when apps crash as the original developer and Apple get that info and it informs them how many users are affected.

This same issue happened with a previous iOS release and I don't recall how long it took Garmin to fix it.

I recalled seeing this earlier and thought to myself "that is just so Garmin for that to happen". I should learn as this kind of unavailability has happened to me in the past on Garmin devices of different types. Granted, the last device hiccup was probably two years ago, and I thought this kind of thing was in the past.

You would think the GPS and plotting tools would ALWAYS work. AlWAYS. Not sometimes.

But not the case. Tonight at about 6 pm while out on the Columbia river near Multnomah Falls, Oregon heading west, my Garmin 5212 (plotter, chart ,etc integrated and built in the 25SC) screen froze. We were thankfully in the middle of the channel, so We slowed down, rebooted, and it came back up after about a minute. Work as expected thereafter.

I wondered what the heck was going on and recalled this email thread I scanned over the weekend.

What gives, Garmin? Any input from someone on the know on this issue? Is it possibly related to the Blue Charts crashing.

Very disappointed in Washington,

Mike

Mike,
Mine has frozen in the past as well, but I am not tied into the bluecharts, so it is an isolated 5212 issue. Not sure what causes it, but as with most computers a reboot fixes the gremlins, a bit annoying but better than a sextant.

I went back and read the owner's manual after scanning your reply. I believe we are both on Blue Charts with 5212's as Garmin adds them to their basic unit. In fact, I found the Blue Charts card in the literature packet. It is similar to the Blue Charts software I run on my handheld Garmin GPS. They just might be having a problem with all Bluecharts currently, but I'm not sure. I may email the factory to find out how widespread the issue is.

What I actually meant to say was that I am not using the Bluetooth interface between my iPad and the 5212. My assumption is that the crash on the iPad is due to an operating system conflict, where as the 5212 ,I would assume, has a different operating system.

I contacted Karen at Active Captain and asked her if she had any insight on the Garmin crash. Here is her response.
At least a better answer than what I have been getting from Garmin.

Mike,

Sorry about the frustrations. We are a tester of the next version and I can say
that it fixed the problem. However I can't tell you when it will be released. I
can't imagine anything other than "soon"...

Mike.... Thanks for the heads up on this fix. I agree... Hooray. 🙂
