After a particularly hard winter in the Bahamas with wave bashing, my Radar and GPS stopped working, The Radar dome was sent back to Garmin for rebuild and I replaced the GPS cord to the GPS receiver. I now do have GPS working on my chartplotter. When I reconnected the Radar Dome to the chart plotter with a new cord, and checked the voltage on the power feed to the radar it read 12.6 V, the radar failed to show up on the chartplotter. So I transferred the Sonar plug in the back of the chartplotter to the Radar plug. The Sonar disappeared from the chartplotter and still no radar. So I reversed the plugs and found to my dismay that I now had no Sonar responding on the chartplotter. Garmin says the plugs are defective on the chartplotter. Has any one had a similar problem. What is the useful life of a chartplotter? I have been told it's between 7 and 10 years. Garmin stays its too old to be serviced.

I find it hard to believe it is too old to be serviced. They are no longer updating the software, but I was told they were still being serviced. On that note however, the newer model, 7612, should fit with some modification to the panel. A much faster processor, no GPS puck required and it is plug and play. Something to consider.
