Hi,

Over the years I have read multiple postings regarding steering issues where the problem was leaking check valves. The problem in the majority of cases was corrected by a check valve kit provided by Garmin. When we purchased our 2018 RT31CB new, I had steering issues which were due to low steering fluid. Once topped up and bled, all appeared to function properly. Under autopilot we never had any issues with steering. Over this past season we were constantly correcting the steering one direction or the other when operating manually. When you would go hard to port or starboard it would appear to lock and then continue to loosen and you would have to keep turning the wheel. The system was bled and and checked for steering fluid level. All was correct. I feel know that the problem can be corrected by installing the Garmin check valve kit. In the multiple threads that I have read, some owners were fortunate to have Garmin do the installation at their expense and other owners had to pay out of pocket. How do I go about getting the service done with Garmin covering some or all of the expense, considering that this problem has been going with many owners for years.
Thanks,
Sonny

Hello Sonny,

Thank you for reaching out and sorry to hear about the issues with the steering system. The best thing to do is to follow the guide to check to ensure if the autopilot is the actual issue. Basically, you will want to turn the autopilot off so it will not be enabled during your cruise. Go back and locate the autopilot pump. On one end of the pump, you will see (3) straight edge screws that you will tighten (clockwise) until they stop. Go and run the boat and see if the pull goes away. Do not run the pilot. If the pull goes away, chances are the pump is the issue and a check valve kit would need to be installed. After you confirm, loosen the three screws and when you feel resistance, make sure you stop. If you loosen them too far, you can damage the internal seals.

At that point, you will want to reach out to the dealer you purchased from to assist with the install or, contact Garmin's customer service to see if they can send you a kit and locate a dealer local to you to assist. Garmin has been great to work with in the past so, I am guessing they will support you however they can.

Thank you,

Thank you Andrew. Will follow through on your recommendations. Thanks for getting back to me.

Best,
Sonny
