I got an email notification yesterday from Garmin that they have updated their software for our chart plotters, NMEA 2000 systems, etc. It looks like a significant update that would apply to all of the Garmin installations in our Ranger Tugs. In fact, the email makes it sound like quite the update: "As an owner of Garmin Marine Electronics, you know that we regularly provide software updates. However, these updates are especially attractive."

You have to have a PC to download and configure a SD card for the update, or you can order it on a SD card for about $30. Once I can find a PC to use (we are a Mac household), I will download the file and try the update. Meanwhile, if anyone else installs the update, can you let us know here on Tugnut how it went?

Is this the version 2016.0223 update?
 
Interesting, Garmin told us at the last rendezvous that they were no longer providing updates for the 5212.
 
If you look at the specifics of what updates are in the bundle, I think you will see that the 5212 is missing, at least it was in the last upload I did for my 76 series chart plotter.
 
You need to use the Legacy download for the GPSMAP 5212.

The last update listed for the 5212 was June 2015. Other devices such as the RADAR and Autopilot had their last updates further back, 2012-2014 time frame.

Our older chartplotters do not have the CPU horsepower or memory to handle the new features.

I'm not going to pretend to understand the complexities of what units this update supports or doesn't. What Garmin says is: "This update provides improved functionality and new features for echoMAPTM and echoMAP CHIRP chartplotter/sonar combos, GPSMAP® 5x7, 7x1, 8x0 and 10x0 chartplotters, GPSMAP 7400 and 7600 chartplotters and GPSMAP 8000, 8200, 8400 and 8600 premium Glass Helm chart plotters." That is enough to make my head hurt.

Then, on the actual download page, there is one link for "GPSMAP Products (5x7/7x1/8x0/10x0/74xx/76xx/8xxx)" as well as a link for "Legacy GPSMAP Products (4x0/4x1/5x0/5x1/5x5/5x6/7x0/4xxx/5xxx/6xxx/7xxx)".

That makes my head hurt some more.

I have all of my Garmin products registered. I assume Garmin sent it to me because the update applies to one or more parts of my system (VHF? Chart plotter? NMEA 2000?) even if it doesn't apply to all. I have some sleuthing to do to figure out what all it applies to, and which download to use (if any).

But I wanted to pass the info on FWIW. And if anyone tries it with success, let us know what it updated for you and how well it worked.

My R-25 (2010) is fitted with a Garmin GPSMAP 4012.

I would like to get updated charts for an upcoming trip.

Should I order: Garmin Bluechart G2 - HXUS039R - Us G2 (Entire Us) - MicroSD and SD from Amazon? $75.90 for the entire US seems OK.??.

During the search, I noticed Garmin has a new software update: October 20, 2016 V 2016,1020 Is this worth applying?

We are a Mac household - I can scrounge up a PC, but if anyone is coming to the South Western Florida Rendezvous that has the update, any chance I can use it for a few minutes?

Just looked over the update, and it seems to cover only additions for support of new sound systems and some sound control. If this is important to you go ahaead. If you have not updated in a while, it may include more features. Garmin updated mine with the most recent updates during the rendezvous at laroche and it fixed a couple mapping issues. At that time my software was less than a year old. You can also purchase from garmin an sd card with the update if this is more convenient for you.
