Over past few days I’ve been updating Garmin software and ActiveCaptain software.

1) After the Garmin software updates completed (with my boat in its covered all metal slip) I found my AIS 800 was no longer receiving and displaying AIS targets on my Chart Plotters. Prior to the updates my AIS 800 was working without issues and displaying all AIS targets in my area. I mentioned this to RT and was told all should be well once I got from under the slip’s metal coverings. Was also asked if there was a “?” on my boat's icon on the 7612’s display. Yes, the “?” shows very briefly at first when the Chart plotter is powered up and then the "?" disappears promptly. I suspect when I next go out which will be over next few days I’m hoping the AIS starts working again as it should be seeing/discovering the satellites etc.

2) All the Garmin software updates were successful except for the VHF 210 AIS unit which indicated "Error". I performed the software updates 3 times and the same error persisted. What can I do to resolve this ? It seems the existing software version is 4.10 and the software update is for 4.20. This Garmin VHF 210 AIS is presumably my boat's radio, right, and has the built-in AIS Receiver ?

Could this error be associated with the Command Bridge's VHF radio not being powered up, although I'm certain it was ?

3) I have three 7612s (in cabin 7612xsv, 7612 and 7612 on Command Bridge). When an update is completed at 100% the 2nd 7612 (to left of my 7612xsv) displays “Network Updates In Progress”. At this time the 7612xsv unit is displaying 100% complete and to “Restart”. I’m confused here as at the start of the software updates there’s clear warning that no device be powered off during the updates. My question is: does the “Network Updates In Progress” on the 7612 to left of my 7612xsv mean software
is still being updated and I should refrain from Restarting ? I waited a full hour and the "Network Updates In Progress” persisted. So in the end I did Restart. Am I doing the Restart correctly and should I simply ignore the "Network Updates In Progress”” and Restart as the 7612xsv resquests ?

I understand that when making software updates all Garmin devices should be powered ON and this includes the VHF radio(s).

When I recently updated my system, the software update to the VHF 210 caused the CB GHS 11 handset to not function even though it was powered on during the installation. The GHS 11 is not a standalone radio and relies on the VHF 210 to operate and it's not enough just to have it powered on during the update - you have to power it on and then set it up manually to receive the update. I did not do this the first time, so the system software update caused the two units to not be in synch. Once they are out of synch, you can't recover the GHS 11 until you perform this procedure on the Garmin support site https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=L ... tab=topics. It requires going to the Garmin update page, downloading the system update to an SD card and then using that card to force the VHF 210 synch update once the GHS 11 handset is set up to receive it. Reinstalling a previous update done through ActiveCaptain has to be done with an SD card, there's no way to redo it through the app.

I go by my main chartplotter's actions since the rest of the system components are networked to it. When the 7612xsv says to restart, I do it and have not had any issues other than the GHS 11 above which was unrelated.

Well, that is not good news about the CB's VHF radio. I will goto boat shortly to see if the CB's radio is operational and expect from what you've posted should be or likely to be inoperative.... this will be a bummer and an annoyance. I'll post back what I find out.

Thanks for your response. 🙂

BTW.... when I goto to the Garmin software update for the GHS 11 handset I'm presented with "Software Information Currently Unavailable"..... horrors for sure. 😱 🙁

interestingly the install guide for the latest garmin update suggests it does not update the VHF 200 series of radios. I wonder if there is now a mismatch between the CB GHS11 which was updated and the VHF which was not

from the install guide

This bundle does not contain software for any of the following:
Meteor 300 Audio System
AIS 300
VHF 100/200/300/300 AIS

Well my CB GHS 11 handheld is operational and at software version 4.2. My cabin helm’s.VHF 210 is operational and its software is 4.2. So IMO all is well. I did nothing except to power on all Garmin devices.

I also now find my AIS 800 is receiving and shows targets on my Chart plotter screens.

Yes... excellent for sure... but I'm still pondering on the significance of the "Error" and would like to know if it's bogus or not. 🙂
