My R25SC has the Garmin GSD-22 sounder with an "in hull" transducer. I want to install a "through the hull" transducer so I can get water temperature, thru the water speed and depth. Is there a spot, recommended by the factory where I can install it? Thank You, Andy on the "Keep on Tuggin".

I suspect the in-hull location, starboard and near the stern, is about the best for these hulls.

The transducer manufacturer says that it should be mounted mid ship. Our through hull mounted at the transom failed. When it did work, we always lost reading whle planing due to turbulence. We mounted the new one beside the shower sump. In that location it works at any speed.

I installed my own Garmin 22 system about 3 years back & I contacted Andrew before installing. My Transducer "shoots thru hull" but does not penetrate the hull. According to Andrew the tugs are built with zero coring material in lower hull (I think there is foam coring in upper structure but no wood coring). As such any location on either side of bilge area around the prop shaft should be ideal. On my R25 the Port side offered more room for installation and I have had good service.

I have and older Garmin 498 with sounder in addition to the much more powerful Garmin 22 system. My years in the NAcy makes me paranoid about hitting bottom. It is interesting that the older cheaper 498 sounder works better (more accurate & less false readings) in shallow water while the Garmin 22 works better in deaper water. Also the Tennessee River wher I usually operate (depth usually 10-100 feet) has considerable soft bottom. The much more powerful Garmin will often show greater depths than the Garmin 498. I investigated this in about 8 feet of water once & determined that the Garmin 22 appeared to be seeing the hard bottom while the weaker 498 was providing its full echo from the upper soft bottom. Just info for those interested.

I appreciate all of the information. Thank You,
