2021 R29CB. Tried to load device updates for MFD and Autopilot- Download from Garmin Active Captain site > iPad > Active Captain on 8612xsv. Error occurred and said retry. Same result. Garmin mailing SD card with updates. 1) anybody else experience same error issue when trying to load updates? 2) is it necessary to follow same sync steps with CB Garmin 8612 or because they are both on the same network only updating the 8612xsv will be sufficient for all devices? Garmin phone support person said the process must be done on both. The Garmin authorized service tech said update procedure must be complete at both stations.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

I’m not sure how helpful this is, but I’ll tell you what I know.

2019 R-29 CB with 2 Garmin 7612s and 1 Garmin 7612sx on the network (with autopilots, etc.). I had the Garmin guy come out and do the update; previous owner never updated in 3 years. He came with a card and warned me against using Active Captain for updates. (Could be his way to stay relevant, tho.) It took a long time — at least 30 minutes? 45? — but did succeed on the first try

One update updated all devices that were turned on and recognized by the system. So make sure you turn all Garmin stuff on before starting.

I’ve since used their laptop app to buy charts and put them on a card to insert in my chart plotter. That was easy. Not sure if updates can be done with the app, which I think they’re trying to phase out in favor of Active Captain.

Good luck. This stuff can be crazy frustrating sometimes.

Thank you sir. I am going to turn on all Garmin devices including those at the CB and try again. However, not sure that is necessary. For example when I create routes on the Garmin MFD in the cabin, the CB MFD is not on. But the routes appear on both units, I sincerely appreciate your response.

The Garmin guy said they all had to be turned on for the update. As the update happens, the main screen shows the progress for each unit as it is updated. I really do think they should all be turned on. Can’t hurt anything. Good luck!
