Recently moored in Avalon the generator intake on my new 29 sucked up several kelp balls all the way through my hose and plugged up the inlet to the strainer. I had to disconnect the hose on both ends to flush it out with the wash down hose. My question is whether or not I can install an additional larger strainer just past the thru hole so that if something gets sucked in it won't be able to go deep into the hose and can be easily removed.

My thoughts are that you should check with the engine manufacturer and or Ranger to ask this question. There are more qualified members then me that might give their opinion but I think you'll find the amount of water coming into the engine has to be below a certain volumne. If you put to an additional larger strainer would it cause more water volumne to flow into the engine? Let us know what the proper solution is.

Is there not a strainer on the outside of the thru hull? These are usuall slotted, and will keep large items from coming up into the sea cock. A sea chest resolves this problem the best--but that is a bit drastic plan in a boat already built. Even with outside strainers, you can get jelly fish, small fish and some grass into the strainers.

I replaced the toy plastic strainer on the generator with a "real" full size bronze strainer. The toy strainer had to be cleaned every single time I used the generator. Especially in the summer when there are a lot of jelly fish in the bay. Now I never have to fool with the sea strainer.
